I can hear Yogi Berra in my mind, “Since Global warming, nobody skis there anymore - always too much snow to get in.”

Since the Mammoth website says you’ve had 30’ for a yearly total at the base I think you might be talking about the summit..which has a year total of 45’ so far.

That’s great!

But you need to get out and smell the cookies, I-M. The other mountain states do a way better job. I-80 through Parleys Canyon is hardly ever closed with similar snowfall, Vail Pass gets hit hard all the time and stays open, notice how you don’t hear about those places being paralyzed in giant traffic jams like I-80 up to Donner Pass.

Been there done all that myself for the last 50 years. You may have some good guys over on the East slope working 395, but the LA born road crews out of Sacramento don’t seem to get the snow thing on the West slope, and they don’t have a make it work attitude...it’s “let’s just close it and hope they go away”.

They really aren’t mountain people.

Hilarious. Wrong again, Big L. Spent way too many hours sitting in the dark on Donner Summit in a 40 mile long traffic jam, chained up and going nowhere.

Never had to do that EVER in Utah (lived in the mtns) although I did spend a pleasant evening at Snowbird back in the mid-70s when Little Cottonwood was closed due to an avalanche. UHP guys cut right through that slide (~ 20 feet on the road) and got us out within 4 hours. Hey, free dinner at Snowbird, watch the sunset down canyon while they worked...it was paradise!

You’re right! It’s a mirage! We’re all in the Globull Warming Desert and seeing things!

Yeah! That’s it! Sez Jerry Brown...believe what I tell you, not your own lyin’ eyes! Boogah Boogah! Now give me money and power!

Whatta crock. These people are all suffering from a mass hallucination called The Crap The Rat Party Tells Us to Think. And then when Reality hits, they’re absolutely unprepared to cope AT ALL.

The truth is that California is going through a wet cycle now - recall the massive storms of 2016-2017 - and it’s blowing their warped little brains. Wait! This isn’t supposed to happen! Gavin told us the Climate is Changing and soon we’re gonna all be living in Tucson on the Bay!

Just a bunch of immature brats who chatter BS.

“A slight breeze will clear their roads”

Hilarious. Read my post about avalanches in Little Cottonwood.

Don’t believe all the Utah Travel Council blurbs. The snow there is not a lot different from the Sierras, the difference is mostly altitude of the ski areas: Squaw tops at 9000’, Alta at 11000’, the base is at 8500’. That 2000’ elevation difference is the real reason for the dry snow in the mountains: it’s a LOT colder.

I’ve skied fabulous powder at Squaw and Alpine during some seriously cold storms and better at Alta and Snowbird, but really not a lot different. It’s just typically colder up higher; in the Southern Sierra at those altitudes I would bet you see the same stuff. But ain’t no ski areas there cuz the Enviros shut down Mineral King a looooong time ago. You recall...

Sorry. Caltrans just doesn’t get it. Flatlander guys. Maybe they’re underfunded, but have watched them many times wait until they get snowpack on the road to start plowing. By then you’re screwed. UHP is out with 1/4” on the road and they have two or three plows in formation with the burners and sand going as well. Parley’s Canyon up over the Summit is hardly ever closed and almost never requires chains. It’s just a different culture: they get after it right away.

Thanks. Those levels are without this season’s snow melt from/in the mountains.

Heavenly Valley blew past the all-time February record on Feb 15th.

Over 16.5 ft as of that date. And certainly more to come.

Overall, the Sierras are at 149% of annual snowfall with at least 8 weeks to go.

Just wow.

Wish I could send you the pic my in laws sent us last night. They’ve gotten over 4 feet of snow in the last few days in Placer County. Trees are coming down from the weight of the snow.

They’ve been without power intermittently for two or three days over the last couple of weeks. Yes, CalTrans is messed up. But with that much snow on those winding mountain roads it would be quite a challenge for any highway department to keep clear.

Best,

L

Yeah, on the back roads it’s definitely a different story. I’m mainly talking about the big roads - I-80 and Hwy 50. Hwy 49 even harder - winding all the way up to Sierraville with almost no resources to plow it. Brother lives off that road, he’s right at the snow line, so not trapped. Yet...

And just to brighten everyone’s day, here’s a GREAT webcam from the top of the Tram at Snowbird, looking downcanyon at Little Cottonwood and the Oquirrh mountains in the background!

https://www.snowbird.com/mountain-report-old-version/#roads

Squaw, Alpine and Mammoth have equally beautiful cams that I looked at this morning at Sunrise, it’s just fabulous here in the West!!

I resolved NEVER to listen to the doom and gloom watermelon naysayers of the insane California Leftist gong show, and have nothing but joy in the incredible part of the planet my ancestors had the good sense to plop me down in!!

Amen to that! Where's the ridiculous "Save Our Snow" commie group these days?

750 miles north of you, Schweitzer has 210 inches so far. Last year it was over 400. It was supposed to be sunny today, but the weather didn't pan out...yet.

Schweitzer is great! A real family area close to all the fun stuff at the lakes — been looking at Hayden/Sandpoint property the other day when I noticed property ON the ski area at Schweitzer, commute distance to Sandpoint!

There is severe danger from avalanches all along Hwy 395 from Mammoth almost the Nevada border.

I'm up near Carson City and I can hear the "booms" from avalanche control up at Tahoe from my house.

Our roads on 395 (Gardnerville to Carson City), CA 88 and 89, and Hwy 50 were terrible yesterday. The snow fell all day and there was no way Caltrans or NDOT could keep up with it.

Much better today!

I remember the winter of '83 there was a cabin across the street being built. It was completely framed and sheathed in before winter came. No one cleared the roof and by March the entire structure collapsed. We had well over 900" that year.
