Funny. I was just thinking the other day about the Hainan Incident in April 2001 where the ChiComs forced down one of our P-3 Orions.
Things were so sleepy, so slow for the months leading up to 9/11 where I had an uneasy feeling just as you described.
Everything seemed too quiet, like we were on the threshold of something big and bad happening. I ignored the feeling.
But for me, it was there. I know what you mean.
This was ROUTINE in my day.
And it’s not a big deal.

Go to the end of the video, at about the 1:26 mark.
There, you will see on the fantail end of the helo pad that we deployed our secret anti-ship weapon and its operator.
That’s right, the crew-served lawn chair, fully armed. The gunner is a Lazyboy First Class, likely with a SPF-50 firing solution.
It would be obvious to me that the Captain was on the bridge, I have little doubt of that.
Recovering helicopters. Russian vessel close aboard. I would bet a year’s pay the Captain was on the bridge, which is a good first step.
Your derogatory comments regarding navy operations are well warranted, even if some of us don’t like hearing them. Can’t argue there.
But if the US vessel was cruising straight and true while recovering its helicopter, it seems pretty apparent the Soviets...er...Russians were trying to cause an incident.
Pretty funny...but I think that is their Russian NATO designated LAZYBOY crew served antishipping weapon...
Mine as well. Fun and games in the South China Sea.
Thank you for the correction.
That is a Russian lawn chair, NATO code named SLACKER.
Our navy always sounds pussified with this whining about an adversary being “unsafe and unprofessional”. Pinch off your nose when you say it and it sounds about right...like someone tattling to the teacher.
The CNN "analyst" is horrible. I doubt they even know port from starboard.
Heh, that was good...your post really got a snicker out of me.
Deadly serious stuff here, but...hey.
I remember standing on the ramp of the USS JFK behind our spotted planes waiting for a launch, and there was a Soviet vessel behind us. They were close enough you could clearly see their bridge lined with people observing us with binoculars.
Three or four of us turned around and dropped our drawers to say hello in the manner of the centuries-old custom...:)
Given the suntanning attack formation, perhaps Ivan was sipping a little Stoli?
Too bad it wasn’t the USS John S. McCain.
Russia is becoming ever more brazen. An incident is certain to happen before long and if we are not fully prepared to act to defend ourselves American credibility and prestige will be seriously damaged.
Strength is the only thing that is respected. If you don’t display that expect to be bullied.
I worry about the proliferation of political correctness into our military. It is weakening us.

To your point: We consider Russias actions during this interaction as unsafe and unprofessional, Doss said.
We consider? This interaction? This all sounds like something from a sterile academic paper.
He should have said: "This reckless provocation intentionally endangered our vessel. We will take action next time to defend our right to transit in these waters."
Time to bring back “Looking Glass”, and Operation Chrome Dome.
Return the B-1B to full nuclear capability.
Give the B-52 the capability to launch nuclear armed cruise missiles.
The talking heads are going nuts as is if this was an act of war when in the past more serious and deadly events occured often with NO media knowledge or coverage. Even Shannahan just made a rare public comment on such a “non-event”. Someone is forcing an agenda, responding to a greater threat we are not aware of, or sublety preparing our nation for an actual armed conflict. China, Russia, Iran and others having some kind of orgy we were not invited to. Our Southern border collapsing and being infiltrated. I feel something “eeuuuge” is about to or IS going down. I think the media is playing right into their? Our? Hands. I fear the uninformed, easily misled masses will REALLY have something to cry about very soon.
I was going to comment about something. Now, I can’t remember what it was after reading your outstanding page here on FR.
Excellent, excellent, excellent!
Airdalechief
Lol. Youve been driving around Moscow.
Sad.
