The thing Trump and Hong Kong are trying to do is force the Communists to adhere to the rule of law. The fact that they don’t adhere to the rule of law is the source of all of their power. Once they agree and do it, then the party’s days are numbered. This is why they haven’t adhered to any trade agreement. This is why if they lose in Hong Kong they are finished as the rulers of China. So, they are willing to kill as many protesters as it takes.
There are several down sides for the party. The party has moved much of its individually held wealth to Hong Kong. If they truly take over then the value of their holdings will tank. The question is, do they want to maintain party power or their individual wealth?
