Lauren Seabrook WFTV: HURRICANE HACK: To know if your power went out long enough for food to spoil, freeze water in a glass, place a quarter on top, then put it back in your freezer. After the storm, if the quarter has fallen down inside the cup, you’ll know power was out long enough to melt the ice.
We do something similar, at our lake place, with a half bottle of water. Freeze, turn upside down....if it’s at the ‘top’ of bottle, we know we lost power, while we were away.
