Tesla Model S doors wouldn't unlock as driver burned to death inside...

A doctor in Florida burned to death because the battery in his Tesla burst into flames and the car's futuristic door handles wouldn't allow a police officer to rescue him, according to a legal complaint.

Dr Omar Awan died in February after his Tesla hit a palm tree.

...part of the design of the Tesla Model S is to retract the door handles into the car and they then "auto-present" and pop out when the car's key fob is detected nearby.

However, the handles malfunctioned and people were not able to open the doors

Dr Awan had no broken bones or other injuries resulting from the crash.

“Cops mostly don’t carry batons any more, after Rodney King”

...and a related question: Why bother to rescue a Tesla driver, considering what they think of cops?

Nothing humorous about people dying in car accidents....

But doesn’t this look like a scene from the old CHips series? They had a lot of fires and explosions in the concrete jungles of the California freeways. Ponch could somehow pull a lovely actress and her pinheaded boyfriend out of the car just as the gas tank blew it twenty feet into the air.

If there is any water more than about a third of the way up, there will be too much force to open it. Also, the electric motor will actually work under water as fresh water is a poor conductor of electricity. Unbuckle everyone inside, wait until the cabin is almost full of water, roll the window down and swim out. Check it out on Mythbusters.

“So much for that record ‘profit’ that Tesla just reported.”

There’s NO SHORTAGE of people (in the US and elsewhere) who need to HOLD THEIR NOSES UP to others - Tesla will do fine, even if they lose a bunch of customers.

“I don’t understand why they didn’t break out the windows, windshield, etc..”

Read the stories about trying to get replacement parts and it will make sense.

Another poster on this thread showed a car window breaker and seat belt cutter. I saw that on the Weather Channel (not a fan or a devotee of their lying climate change propaganda BS). So You Think You’d Survive show.

Should really buy one.

I drive a Model S...

Can you confirm that the interior door handle opens the door manually if you pull the handle all the way out? Maybe you can't, since if the electric door opener works, the door will already be open before the manual opener engages.

(FR has plenty of Tesla haters. I am not one of them.)

“As for the burning driver, he has the comfort of dying with a small carbon footprint. And the cremation is already started... “

Agree. The ‘carbon footprint’ of this driver checking out is about as small as one can hope for. Certainly a POSITIVE for Tesla.

“That only applies to the IDIOTS who actually drive the car.”

“Makes me glad I will never own a Tesla.”

LOL! If you are injured in YOUR car your outside door handles won’t open YOUR locked doors.

YOU are driving a death trap just like the Tesla!

I had a salesman (saleskid actually), shake his head at me and I bet I know what he was thinking when I was looking for a bigger gun safe.

I wanted a mechanical lock and he KNEW that I really needed an electronic lock.

I won.

The interior mechanism is essentially a traditional-style door release pull with two stops. The first stop triggers an electronic door release, and opens the door. Open to full extension, and a mechanical door release operates, even if there's a loss of power — it isn't confusing to operate...

Tesla uses a nifty flush fitment for its exterior door handles on the Model S that pop out to welcome you as you walk up to the car with the key.

All the driver had to do was pull hard on the interior handle.

Why did this driver choose to drive a Tesla over a conventional luxury car ?
