Poway High School Will Add Shower and Laundry Facilities for Homeless Students
ktla ^ | 12/26/2019

“If a kid hasn’t showered in a couple days, everybody knows,” he said. “Or if you’re wearing the same clothes, or they’re not clean, by having a place where kids can get a shower and get their clothes clean, it normalizes things and removes some of the stigma that makes coming to school and focusing more difficult.”

About 1% of students in the Poway Unified School District are classified as “youth in transition,” Henry said. At Abraxas, the district’s continuation high school, 14% of students fall into that category, which broadly means they lack a stable place to live.

Will they have separate facilities for males and females, or is that illegal now?

The school being the parent and social service does not solve the real problems.

So long as this is limited to current students, it’s probably a good idea. That area needs supervision, though, to make sure it doesn’t become a Homeless Student Hangout and Drug Mart. The attempts will be made.

I think showering after gym class has become passé. Maybe even gym class has become passé. The idea of a washer/dryer is not a bad idea. Some of the kids who need it aren’t even homeless. They just have parents who don’t care.

They don’t want to solve the real problems since they created them. This isn’t for the “homeless” it’s for the illegals who may happen to be homeless. Just like the bullying legislation wasn’t for bullying of students but for negativity against homosexuals/homosexual agenda which also incorporates anything “racist” or xenophobic, etc. Basically, anything against the current liberal, democrat, socialist agenda.

They’re not trying to solve the real problems, they’re just trying to make the government, the liberal government, the parent since the parents seemingly want that. It’s astonishing. Conservatives seem to be on board with it since they want to micromanage everyone’s lives too. We see it in healthcare, education, etc. Smoking is bad. E-cigarettes are worse (even though studies show differently, but we can’t mention the drugs or the additives to vaping because that doesn’t support the agenda). Straws are bad. Paper straws are better (just like paper bags were better last decade but worse 3 decades ago). Plastic is bad. We need reuseable bags. But plastic was better than paper 3 decades ago. Recycle! No straws unless they’re paper now. No bags unless they’re reusable. No smoking because CANCER but no ecigs because they’re bad too. But CBD is awesome and lets legalize it. Weed is fine, legalize it (even though it was legal 100 years ago and then illegal for some unknown reason).

The Nanny State is neither democrat nor republican. But it is anti American. It has affected every aspect of our lives. Education, Sports, etc.

I agree. Years ago when I was in 8th grade a teacher of mine sent the boys out of the room then had a very frank talk with the girls. The talk included reminding those who did not have running water that they could come early to school and she would make sure they got to use the gym showers.

Good idea, no kid chooses to be homeless.

Then shouldn't the schools also be providing sleeping facilities?

Not many. Poway Unified has some outstanding schools, but the one mentioned here is a “continuation school” for problem kids who have been kicked out of other schools, have behavior issues, drug abuse problems, abusive households, etc. These kids are much more likely to have been kicked out by their parents or have run away.

it normalizes things

This directed at the parents, not the kids, although they will grow up thinking this is "normal", too.

We have "normalized" way too many things. Things that were taboo a generation ago are commonplace today. We have made "being poor" way too easy. We enable laziness. No wonder a whole generation sees the Feral Gubbmint as "they Baby Daddy".

They don’t have showers in the locker rooms any more? How soon before they just build apartments, or dorms?
