Germany just guaranteed unemployed citizens around $330 per month indefinitely. The policy looks a lot like basic income

... The new ruling prevents the government from slashing more than 30% of an unemployed person's benefits under the program. That guarantees unemployed residents at least 300 euros ($333) per month. Even then, the punishment can be waived if it threatens to cause extreme hardship. The three-month suspension can also be shortened if an individual works with their government-appointed adviser to seek employment or enroll in a training program.

Housing and healthcare assistance will continue to be provided under the new policy.

The decision followed a complaint from a resident who turned down a warehouse job because he wanted to work in sales. He claims he lost around 235 euros ($260) per month as a result — almost half of the average monthly payment.

The change takes Germany a significant step closer to offering a basic income, especially since the payments continue indefinitely — unlike unemployment benefits in the US.

Isn't that covered by the "penumbra" of the Constitution?

I heard they tried it in Finland and none of participants ever tried to get a job as a result. Social parasitism at its finest.

A family can survive on that in Germany? You certainly can’t in the US.

If it moves, tax it.
If it keeps moving, regulate it.
And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

They can if they're living in a van down by der Fluss.

I would think a large family would benefit most rather than a single person.
People would get their housing and energy bills paid and then the 300 euros a month on top of that.

Each child gets about 150 euros a month.

Let’s say my small family gets on this:
300 (me) + 300 (wife) + 150 (child) = 750 euros a month, with rent and energy bills paid also.

Housing and healthcare assistance will continue to be provided under the new policy...

It’s 330 bucks ON TOP OF healthcare, housing and I’m sure food.

It’s playing around cash.

For nothing :)

There is no food assistance in Germany so people would have to use their 300 for that.
There are food charities though.

They’ll just spend it all on bratwurst, Pilsner, pretzels and transportation to and from the biergarten.

The relative value of a universal basic income depends on whether other benefits are also provided and taken account of, such as free health care, housing, and food. Otherwise, as measured by purchasing power parity, the US usually ranks as having a per capita income about 20 per cent higher than Germany. The official US poverty rate is now just under 12 per cent, as compared to the 15.7 per cent rate in Germany cited by the article. By most measures and accounts of US visitors and residents in Germany, the country is less affluent than the United States but not dramatically cheaper as to living costs.

Just like US Germany varies from one place to another. Munich is one thing and Leipzig or Berlin is another thing.

“It's not an endlessly expanding list of rights — the 'right' to education, the 'right' to health care, the 'right' to food and housing. That's not freedom, that's dependency. Those aren't rights, those are the rations of slavery — hay and a barn for human cattle.” ― Alexis de Tocqueville

Maybe it's enough to buy a month's supply of lottery tickets.

Quite true. With such variations, the German UBT seems unlikely to be as transformative as its advocates hope. In the end, it will end up as just another element of the package of benefits provided by the German welfare state.

$330? That’s it? The Green New Deal gives a lot more for people unwilling to work. Come to America and you’ll get a lot more!
