California’s latest pollution push: Banning gas-powered mowers and blowers
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | January 6, 2020 | Mallory Moench

The next frontier in California’s battle against pollution: lawn equipment.

State air regulators are laying long-term plans to phase out gasoline-powered devices like leaf blowers and lawn mowers, saying they can produce more noxious emissions than cars.

Plenty of Bay Area cities are already acting: At least eight have banned gas-powered blowers, and more restrict their use during times of day or up to a certain noise level. Novato may soon join the list.

“What I think we need to realize is that we have to do something different for climate change in the world,” said Novato Mayor Pro Tem Pat Eklund, who proposed a ban on gas lawn mowers and leaf blowers in December. “If not, we are going to see a different world than we do today. Every little bit is going to help.”

Such restrictions force people to use cleaner, quieter electric machinery instead. But they are not universally popular.

Jose Vaca, who owns Vaca Construction and Landscaping, which has locations in Novato and Petaluma, said he would have to buy up to five batteries — costing an average of $100 to $200 each — to finish jobs on large properties like homeowner associations or shopping centers. Electric leaf blowers would make tasks longer and more expensive, he said.

Vaca said he has already ended contracts in Mill Valley because of the city’s ban on gas-powered leaf blowers. If Novato implements a similar restriction, he’ll do the same.

“We would just start canceling more contracts and moving up north,” he said.

While cars produce more carbon dioxide, small engines can emit more of other problematic gases.

You get a large plastic tarp and blow it onto it. It then can be easily bunched together for bagging by lifting the corners to get the leaves in the center

+++++” leaf blowers and lawn mowers, saying they can produce more noxious emissions than cars.....”++++++

First off, this is not the role of a “limited government”. Secondly, what’s next? Grilling? Scented candles? Farting? Exhaling?

Virtually the entire state has moved beyond idiocy.
Does anyone still live in Cali other than illegals and the far left progressives who would make flat-earther’s look like pathetic joke? /s

I don’t always call them leaf blowers. I call them Mexican bagpipes.

i have no problem getting rid of obnoxious leafblowers.
Me too.

And you can get rid of obnoxious Harley Davidson motorcycles while you're at it..and don't insult me with this "it's for my safety" bullshit either.

Where I live, multiple guys blow it into a huge pile, where the truck with the vacuum sucks them all up.

What else will you be dictating we get rid of?

Love to see those mowers on the sides of hwys with their electric buggys. ....

Like Rush says, ...a jetliner can’t run on unicorns and rainbow farts. ....well he said something like that. ..

Here’s some trivia most have forgotten. ..
After 911 and Bush grounded all air travel. ..the air temperature throughout America rose because the plane contrails stopped.

Does this mean that we will be able to stop paying extra for crappy CARB compliant equipment in the rest of the country?

“Soon they’ll have us all use scythes and goats to mow our lawns.”

Goats do a great job as long as you don’t mind not having any lawn left when they’re done. But,hey, dirt doesn’t need mowing. Maybe we should tell the “person of the year” Greta Thunburg........nah

Caveat: they don’t run for ever. The battery needs to be recharged at an interval that roughly coincides with my time for a rest

Fine for you and me, and probably fine for most homeowners, but not so fine for commercial lawn care companies who work 8 hour shifts. That'd be a lot of batteries to haul around from job to job, and then put on a bank of chargers overnight.

What is with the Left’s approval of electricity as a means of power? I thought they hated coal? Do they really think wind farms and solar is going to be anywhere near sufficient? Stupid question, I know! They know it’s not sufficient. That’s how they plan to remove every last vestige of modern convenience from Americans and turn us into a third world existence.

Wetbacks throughout the Kalifornia gulag will be saddened by this news, right before they raise their prices x10.

Grilling: Phase 2
Scented Candles: Protected Class
Farting: Phase 3
Exhaling: Phase 4

Socialists always get to Phase 4, sooner or later...

Yea, blowing onto a tarp in the street.

Ever hear of a broom or a rake?

You get a large plastic tarp and blow it onto it. It then can be easily bunched together for bagging by lifting the corners to get the leaves in the center
Or you could rake or sweep the leaves etc. directly into bags.

How stupid can you be to try and get the leaves from a "large plastic tarp" into garbage bags without a rake or a broom?

Gasoline powered equipment releases a lot of smog-forming pollutants, but not much CO2. Using a battery-powered tool recharged by a conventional power source will emit twice as much CO2 into the atmosphere for the same amount of work.

This is just simple physics.

It is the old enviro 1/2. When they want to ban one thing, it is all about CO2. When they want to ban the other thing, it is all about VOCs. When they want to ban small engines, it is all about smog-forming pollutants.

The fact I don’t have to pull and pull and cuss and cuss the small engine is life changing

Hear! Hear! the ONLY time I've ever had a gas powered blower or trimmer start up is the first year of it's use.
Subsequent years, you pull and pull and pull - I think it's by design.
Wife had me throw them all out and hire a yard service

This.

And I blow my crap onto my own property, just like I said. God, you people are obnoxious. I think if you lived next to me, I'd blow it all on yours every day while you're asleep.
