In your case, “Caution” is quite reasonable. Paranoia is the irrational belief that someone is out to get you. “Irrational” is the key word there. Your case, it’s not irrational to be cautious.
I spent 24 years in the USAF. There is a joke, true but sometimes not all that funny.

A: The Boy Scouts have adult supervision and are allowed to carry knives.
I spent 15 of those years where I was possibly the closest thing to adult supervision that the troops I worked with had. I cannot begin to tell you how scary that was. ;)
I’ve recently taken the local concealed carry class. I’m saving my pennies for the permit, now. I’ve never been particularly interested in shooting anyone, but things have degraded in US society badly enough that I’m afraid I may have to. I’m a little younger than Jack Wilson, and not nearly as good a shot, but I can at least do something about that last problem, anyway.

A person does an illegal act or he doesn’t. Does “intent” matter?
The concealed carry permit in my State comes from Ethan Allen and his Green Mountain Boys. There’s no charge for that. If one has to pay to exercise a constitutional right, then it’s not really a right.
