Pulling yourself up by the bootstraps refers to the Prusik Ascent taught in military training where a soldier literally pulls themselves up a rope using only their boot laces. What at first seemed impossible became possible through the correct training and determination. Which is a great metalhor for the American dream. You arent guaranteed success, but if you prepare train and give it your all you just might make it big... and there is t some big government standing on your neck while you try...
