Trump's commutation of Blagojevich sentence sparks anger from Illinois House Republican leader

The Illinois House Republican leader blasted President Trump on Tuesday for granting clemency to former Democratic Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who was convicted of trying to sell Barack Obama's vacant Senate seat after he was elected president.

"It's very disappointing," Jim Durkin told reporters in the state capitol in Springfield. “We have a massive federal investigation into corruption in the state of Illinois and this action distracts and dilutes what I think is the proper role of the Department of Justice — to root out corruption,”

He said Blagojevich was "rouge on steroids" during his tenure as governor.

Blagojevich was found guilty, and that conviction still stands.

But the length of his sentence was WAY out of proportion, so the President’s action is right and just!!

“I’m a little confused about Blagojevich being pardoned. He was definitely a POS who had crooked doings across a number of enterprises. The others on Trump’s list make sense. Blagojevich, not so much.”

That was my first reaction to hearing this as well, but after thinking about it I am assuming they cut a deal with him. He has to know a lot about the dirty crap Bozzo and Jarret were involved in in Chicago.

“Maybe Trump is playing some sort of 4-D chess game that I just can’t follow. But on the surface this commutation seems like a bad idea. “

This is probably political cover for pardoning the people Mueller railroaded. He had to do the Democrats first. If that’s the case, I understand and agree.

We call it ‘blusher’ now. My grandmother was the last woman I heard say ‘rouge’.

Doesn't make any sense that Trump would get involved at all...And that's why it makes sense...Must be something going on behind the scenes...

The democrats locked up Blago and threw away the key. Don’t listen to this republican Illinois house leader. There are few real republicans in Illinois. Blago was tossed in jail because he disobeyed the Obama people. The republicans have nothing to do with it. Republicans have no dog in this fight. Blago took the black vote away from the Chicago machine. And for that, they tapped his phones. They took him early in the morning in handcuffs. Its the same old story. The Obama DOJ people are ruthless. Blago will likely never be able to eat out in Chicago. He should move to Florida.

He wasn’t pardoned. His sentence was just commuted. That means Trump thought 8 years was enough for lying to FBI. Remember he only talked about how valuable that seat was, he didn’t actually sell it.

I don’t think Blago was pardoned. His conviction still stands, but his sentence was commuted. I may be wrong about this.

If I were the sentencing judge and in a generous merciful mood I would have given him life in lieu of the gallows.

That's the way I see it...Trump says he's going to sue everybody and as peeved as Blago must be at Obama, he's got 8 years worth of info he wants to spill...

He said Blagojevich was "rouge on steroids" during his tenure as governor.

So he had an healthy glow. Better than eyeliner on steroids.

"But on the surface this commutation seems like a bad idea."

Nothing is worse than Bill Clinton, in his last hours in office, giving a pardon to the fugitives Mark Rich and his partner Pincus Green, knowing full-well they were both fugitives from justice.

And these past two nights I've been watching the History Channel's docu-drama of George Washington, and puke every time Bill Clinton shows up to comment on the man. Why the History Channel decided to have the rapist, perjurer, and criminal Clinton comment on the Father of Our Country is beyond me.

The pedo scoutmaster of my boy scout troop pled guilty to four counts of child molestation of scougts and did less time in the slammer than Blago has already served. This isn’t a big deal. Trump is commuting a few years and not pardoning him.

8 years really is a long time for a politician to be in prison. It’s like 56 years in regular citizen years.

Dems will find a way to put Blago back in slam shortly on other charges.
