San Francisco Declares State Of Emergency Over Coronavirus

The mayor of San Francisco declared a state of emergency over coronavirus fears on Tuesday shortly after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a warning that the U.S. will likely see more cases.

There are 57 known cases in the U.S. and no cases in San Francisco, but Mayor London Breed pointed to the virus’ unpredictability and troubling global growth.

"We see the virus spreading in new parts of the world every day, and we are taking the necessary steps to protect San Franciscans from harm," Breed said. She said many of the city's residents travel to mainland China, so it is not far-fetched to suspect cases in the future.

SFGate reported that U.C. San Francisco two cases successfully earlier this month. The declaration is effective immediately and will be voted on early next month. The Los Angeles Times reported that San Diego and Santa Clara counties have made similar declarations.

China, by far, still has the most cases and deaths from the illness, though its numbers have slowed recently. Chinese officials Wednesday reported another 406 cases and 52 additional deaths, all of them in hard-hit Hubei province and all but 10 in the epicenter of the city of Wuhan.

China has recorded 2,715 deaths from COVID-19 and 78,064 confirmed cases of the virus on the mainland since the illness emerged in December.

New outbreaks occurring in far-flung places were raising concerns about containing the illness and what will happen when it reaches new places.

"It's not so much a question of if this will happen anymore, but rather more a question of exactly when this will happen --

This is to get their name on the front pages and to double down on the Senators slamming the administration for not doing more.

Total BS. Ina reasonably healthy country with a working medical establishment, this coronavirus is a nothing burger.

Third world countries (Iran) and Chine (really is a third world country) will be hurt by this. China especially, since it lied to it’s own people at the beginning and they did not take reasonable precautions.

That is no doubt going to be one of the emergency measures. Otherwise, the role of fecal matter in transmitting the virus assures a local epidemic once it reaches the homeless. Indeed, even the prospect of such a development when the virus reaches the US is likely to collapse the City's economy as workers quit their jobs and residents flee rather than risk a deadly infection from the uncontrolled homeless populace.

My guess is that major employers have already warned San Fransicso's government that the relocation of headquarters and operations from the city will soon be inevitable and potentially permanent. This kind of covert business influence on the Leftists running the City will be obscured for the sake of avoiding mutual embarrassment.

If there isn’t a funding issue today, they will think of one tomorrow. CA always has their hand out.

The mayor knows that the dung heap that is San Francisco will be a friendly environment for the virus.

Meanwhile, a cholera or typhus outbreak amongst the tent squatters is more likely and much more dangerous

I read that within the last two weeks the mayor is embroiled in a bit of controversy over gifts.

". . . and no cases in San Francisco . . ."

Meaning none reported, not none they know of.

San Francisco has been a disaster for years. Only now do they declare an emergency. With all the zombies crapping in the street, disease is probably rampant. Maybe with the coronavirus they’ll start to clean up their act.

Homeless people infected could spread the virus exponentially in every big city. SF wants more money for political reasons, give us money or its Trump’s fault for the spread, SF gets millions and spends it somewhere else, and still blames Trump. Just a money grab for California, lose-lose situation for Trump either way.

Nope. If it spreads to most of the population, and is severe in some minority of people, the healthcare system will be swamped.

Sanctuary cities with huge homeless and filth problems, ready and willing to become hotspots for the virus.

Because of the new ability to work remotely it's time to re-think the whole idea of having cities, subways, commuter rail, tall buildings, elevators, department stores. Collectively all this adds up to a mass virus manufacturing and distribution system. When someone catches a virus and works in a tall skinny skyscraper, the whole tower turns into a hospital ward with coughing and sneezing for months.

Gaia is trying to kill us, and will win some battles. Don't give her easy targets. Big cities are a relatively new evolutionary experiment and it's not working out well.

Emergency? Are they going to hose the crap in the streets down with bleach, bust up the tent cities and move the crazies to fenced in areas, and generally practice good health hygiene?

I doubt it.
