Panic buying strips store shelves as people stockpile amid coronavirus outbreak
Daily Mail (UK) ^

Supermarket shelves are starting to be stripped bare as Americans prepare for the spread of coronavirus by stockpiling on medications and non-perishable items across the country.

People have been panic buying items from stores ever since health authorities warned that Americans should start preparing for domestic acceleration of the virus, which has infected more than 80,000 people worldwide and killed nearly 3,000.

There are now 60 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the U.S. and the first case where the origin of the disease is unknown was confirmed on Wednesday.

Supplies have been flying off the shelves countrywide this week with people posting photos on social media showing the lack of products available in some stores and pharmacies.

A supermarket aisle in Virginia had been stripped of non-perishable items like pasta.

People were also sharing photos of their coronavirus stockpiles at home, including one man in Texas who said he bought a year's supply on non-perishable food in one night.

Jesse Colombo, who is a financial analyst in Dallas, tweeted a photo of his emergency food pile, including rice, Spam, freeze-dried foods and beans.

'I just bought an additional year's worth of food last night. Everyone needs to have a stockpile of food. I wouldn't even touch stocks (or even gold/silver) before having food in these times,' he tweeted, adding he was 'on edge' with everything that was happening in relation to coronavirus and the economy.

A woman in Michigan shared a photo of her 'grocery store basement' that was filled with shelves stocked full of items.

It comes as thousands of people were buying up face masks to protect themselves despite evidence that most people who aren't sick don't need to wear them.

This is garbage to try to incite panic buying and panic in general. On the part of the MSM and some FReepers.

Maybe but the threat appears to be real.

Why have the governments of ALL countries affected taken extreme steps to stop its spread?

Why did the US ban flights from China? Why is Italy cutting off entire towns to stop its spread? Why did Japan close all schools for a month? Why has Israel essentially shut down travel?

Understand that countries are doing things that are unprecedented in modern times to try and stop this. If it's NOT a big deal why are they essentially shutting down their economies (China, South Korea, Japan etc) to try and deal with this?

Still shouldn’t the idea of a company trading 200 times earnings be MORE scary to the markets than NO DEATHS panic in North America?

I don't think the stock market is pancking. It's all about supply chain disruptions. China has stopped what....70% of exports. South Korea and Japan are about to do it if they haven't already. Our society runs on Just In Time model. Nobody keeps large inventories because it's considered wasteful.

Stocks were probably overpriced and a 10-15% correction was in order and predicted, this was just the impetus.

I never said anything about it not being real. It’s as real as SARS or Ebola or anything else we’ve seen. Some seem to be doing an excellent job of handling this (Singapore is a great example).

What I said was that there are people invested in creating panic. This is true of the MSM for political reasons as well as just to ‘sell copy’ and among some FReepers who seem to be cheering this thing on and are disappointed whenever any positive news comes out.

Since I live in Florida, my wife and I buy some staples to keep on hand for Hurricane Season. We’re not worried about the virus, but we’ll probably just buy our hurricane staples a little earlier this year. That’s the only change we’re going to make. Why worry about stuff you really can’t control anyways. Go live your life, and if it’s your time to go, then someone above your pay grade is going to make that decision...

I don’t know if it’s accurate but I did hear that Corona beer sales took a noticeable hit when the coronavirus first became big news.

That won’t last because no dedicated beer drinker will let a plague virus interfere with their favorite brew even if it was to blame.

So you are not leaning towards Jamie Dimon working with George Soros to sell clients stocks to generate a manufactured sell off? Why isn’t copper or zinc crashing?

It is. Want to see why they were effective? Go here:

They have taken steps that we haven't even come close to in the US yet.

REPORT:

Costco was a little busier than normal, but this is the time for monthly SS payments, so that was probably most of it, although I did see a few people stocking up on bottled water and toilet paper, and truth be told, I’m about to order some extra ammo.

I don’t think we have anything to worry about, but Mrs. Chandler is buying the line about needing extra ammo. Never let a crisis go to waste.

Oh these reporters should go to a Michigan grocery the days before Christmas and Thanksgiving if you want to see “panic buying”. LOL!

Probably a run on batteries too, why, I haven't a clue.

If I owned a grocery store, I'd order extra inventory and run a Corona Virus Sale.

Corona Extra...

Chinese noodles

An array of pantry-filling foods

Clorox Wipes.

Big sales... if not already open 24-hours, announce extended hours. Offer recommendations to properly stock a pantry...

A win-win as people should prepare and they really should have months of foods on hand.

Uh huh....

And the cases are exploding in the US like they are in Iran and South Korea are they? No. We’ve had patients here for weeks (several recovered), and we’re only at 60. Stop being such a doomsayer. Yeah sensible precautions are warranted, but this is not the end of the world.

Or are you shorting the market? Is that your game with some of the other ‘sky is falling’ group? Playing the short?

Your advice is prudent.

A reason to be concerned? Yes.
A reason for full-blown panic? No.

What’s been going on over the past few days is ridiculous.
The media just using it to keep people all wound up, partly for ratings, and partly because they think it will damage Trump.

Singapore is not a democratic country. It’s sort of a soft dictatorship. And it only has 5 1/2 million people.

You can do things there with the accepted levels of government control that you could never do in a country of 330+ million where everybody has individual rights.
