Panic buying strips store shelves as people stockpile amid coronavirus outbreak

Supermarket shelves are starting to be stripped bare as Americans prepare for the spread of coronavirus by stockpiling on medications and non-perishable items across the country.

People have been panic buying items from stores ever since health authorities warned that Americans should start preparing for domestic acceleration of the virus, which has infected more than 80,000 people worldwide and killed nearly 3,000.

There are now 60 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the U.S. and the first case where the origin of the disease is unknown was confirmed on Wednesday.

Supplies have been flying off the shelves countrywide this week with people posting photos on social media showing the lack of products available in some stores and pharmacies.

A supermarket aisle in Virginia had been stripped of non-perishable items like pasta.

People were also sharing photos of their coronavirus stockpiles at home, including one man in Texas who said he bought a year's supply on non-perishable food in one night.

Jesse Colombo, who is a financial analyst in Dallas, tweeted a photo of his emergency food pile, including rice, Spam, freeze-dried foods and beans.

'I just bought an additional year's worth of food last night. Everyone needs to have a stockpile of food. I wouldn't even touch stocks (or even gold/silver) before having food in these times,' he tweeted, adding he was 'on edge' with everything that was happening in relation to coronavirus and the economy.

A woman in Michigan shared a photo of her 'grocery store basement' that was filled with shelves stocked full of items.

It comes as thousands of people were buying up face masks to protect themselves despite evidence that most people who aren't sick don't need to wear them.

Exactly .
The DM is famous for recycling photos from old stories .
The DM needs to stopped .

The only panic buying at the local store was the pricey IPA beer was
on Sale .

The virus matter is very serious but the DM bold face lying and trying to create panic should cause the staff to be arrested.

I carry the hand sanitizer in the truck. I squirt some on my hands when I get out. So, normal fly hygiene is not foreign to me.

But to have everyone lined up going into the store and having the cart handles wiped down by an employee? That was a first for me.

I found it unusual.

Margin selling. They are dumping anything with “value” to cover the leverage losses.

The “gold” that was selling off was “paper gold.” Good time to pick up physical metals.

Might have just gotten to your area or they are making it a company wide policy.

But yeah, they have been wiping the cart handles here for about two years. I am sure the cart collectors are not exactly happy but I think it has boosted customer satisfaction.

I used to carry a small packet of wipes with me and do the handle before shopping but a lot of the other stores now have the disinfecting wipe right beside the carts so you can wipe your own if so inclined.

Report from my son who was at a Walmart in Asheville, NC this afternoon.

Bulk size toilet paper was sold out. A guy was buying a cart load of Clorox. Camping stoves were sold out. Bic lighters were sold out. Lots of canned goods being bought.

Of the 60 odd cases attributed to the U.S. only 18 of them are mainland. The rest are the Diamond Princess cruise. Of the 18 mainland, 7 are already reported as recovered. Our first cases were several weeks ago.... so I still don’t understand why some people think we are doing so poorly.

The fact the CDC and FDA hasn't been tested people .
They blew it .
We have only 459 tested two days ago with a 375 m people .
We are looking like China with fake stats.

just went grocery shopping in several stores: no lines, no stripped shelves, no panic buying ...

looks like your continued efforts to spread fear, uncertainty, doubt, panic and just general boolshite are still failing miserably ...

I agree. I did notice most of the bleach gone at the grocery store today when I went to grab some. Could be just a stocking issue. But, other than that, everything was fully stocked.

“But no one was “overstocking” stuff. It looked like normal shopping.”

I think many/most are just filling their pantries, freezers, medicine cabinets and cleaning closets up nicely, and getting some extra water jugs and sanitizers.

In your opinion, which I value. If a person had 100 bucks right now and had to feed a family of 4 for a month what would you buy?

You can lay the single-deep toilet paper packs in the attic for extra insulation, too.
