If they are not effective, why do you want them for yourselves?
If you think a mask is going to PREVENT you from getting infected you are misinformed.
If you are sick and wear a mask, however, there is less of a chance that you will infect others.
An infected health care worker can infect a lot of people.
I believe the gubmint has taken possession of all 43,000,000 million masks in the country. They are not being restocked for consumers. Im thinking the feds proactively took possession of masks and production. In the short term it makes sense to ensure health care personnel get limited supplies.
Exactly what my dr.told me the other day when she diagnosed me with bacterial pneumonia.
Most over-the-counter masks are designed to prevent you from giving some disease to someone else. They are not designed to prevent you from getting a disease from others. ;-)
I suspect that a good heavy scarf over your mouth and nose will protect you as well - or better - as one of those flimsy surgical masks.
Washing your hands well and very frequently will protect you even more.
Don’t displace your own responsibility for careful hygiene and situational awareness onto some ‘product’.
CAsue you can catch this crap through your eyes Notice the hospital people wearing goggles also.
The washable masks do not filter out the small particles like a virus has.
Are you in Germany now? It would be interesting to hear about how people are reacting there. My German friends always seemed more fatalistic and not prone to panic.
Here in Wisconsin, in many ways the most Germanic U.S. state, people here are still almost completely unconcerned. I went to several hardware stores yesterday and there were still plenty of N95 (or better) masks and respirators on the shelves. There have been no food shortages of any kind and all of the shelves in the grocery stores I have visited are full.
“Also, take lots of Vitamin C! Apparently Vitamin C suppresses colds and flu!”
‘APPARENTLY” ?
“CURING THE INCURABLE, Vitamin C, Infectious Diseases and Toxins” - Dr. Thomas E. Levy cites over a thousand studies and references that show the effectiveness of high dose Vitamin C on a very wide spectrum of illness and toxins. High dose Vit C is the go to CURE that has saved lives when traditional drugs and treatments fail.
But they prolly would rather you don’t know that.
Get it, read it, take it, feel good
Dont confuse best by dates as expiration dates. That date is quality and taste guaranteed by the manufacturer. They will have a shelf life that lasts years beyond it.
Great advice. To avoid getting sick you should stay home when sick. Got it. Will do that.
That is like a casino pit boss saying dont play that slot machine.
> If something really does go south, do you have enough food, enough prescription drugs, enough fuel to light or cook with?
More importantly, do you have enough ammo?
Health workers are covered head to toe because they are dealing with sick people. They arent wearing them in the grocery store.
Amen and pass the taters
Dr. Levy’s paper is the source of my comment.
That doesnt make sense and reads like the masks only work in one direction.
======================================================
They do only work in one direction...to a degree.
Take the N95 respirator for instance. It has an up to 95% (but not 100%) effective rate of blocking particles down to 0.3 microns in size.[1][2]
Human coronaviruses (there are several variants) measure between 0.05 and 0.2 microns.[3][4]
That means, the Coronavirus itself is too small to be stopped by an N95 respirator.
However...any Coronavirus that is attached to other particles (ex. mucus blobs) would be stopped at a 95% rate, so long as the overall particle was 0.3 microns or larger.
Which brings us to the point of these respirators really working "one way." When worn by health care professionals in a setting such as surgery, or even an office visit, it helps prevents the health care provider from transferring their illness to the patient from either a sneeze or even just exhaling bacteria or even some viruses (that are carried by mucus or exhaled air).
From [1] source above:
Q. Can the 3MTM N95 Respirators be used in surgery? A. Yes. The 3M Particulate Respirators and Surgical Masks 1860/1860S and 1870 are cleared for use as a surgical mask by the FDA. They provide greater than 99% bacterial (edit: bateria are generally MUCH larger than viruses) filtration efficiency against wearer generated particles according to the Modified Greene and Velsey test method. They are also fluid resistant to help reduce exposure to blood and body fluids. And those "surgical" masks provide even less protection than an N95 respirator.
So bottom line....at best, an N95 respirator will only stop Covid-19, at a 95% rate, only if that virus is attached to something else making it larger than 0.3 microns. If the virus is airborne on it's own....the N95 can't stop it.
See above.
