Oh,well were are F’d. ONLY SCBA can save us.
Very early, I read a post (right here) of an Asian lady in the post office, mailing a bunch of masks back to (China?), apparently it was not the first bunch, and apparently there were others as well.
I hope that has stopped now.
Coronavirus can’t fly (no wings)...transmission is via droplets (big)...and aerosol (smaller droplets). And from surfaces to hands to mucus membranes.
Some droplet/aerosol info. here:
I thought the same.
No, but seriously, the only hope you have of stopping up to 95% of airborne Coronavirus, and letting 5%+ through, is (1) Your wearing an N95 respirator...and wearing it properly (generally done via a "fit test.") and (2) the Coronavirus isn't alone...it's attached to something bigger and must be at least 0.3 microns or larger.
Of course, this says nothing of those not wearing protection goggles as well to prevent the virus from entering your eyes.
Then, what about your ears? Bacteria and viruses can enter your body via your ears as well. [1]
Point is, the average person out there is greatly misinformed about protection from Coronavirus if they wear an N95 respirator. It's not the safeguard against Coronavirus that people think it is.
Well I am half Germanic, and a bit of a prepper.
True, but combined with proper hygiene/hand washing the mask offers an extra layer of protection, and some (millions) of people in the US know that. (In addition to the ones who incorrectly think masks are a panacea). The Surgeon General should stick to making sure USA production of masks is ramped up/expedited...not wasting his time with "...don't buy masks, they only work on doctors & nurses!".
Planning...if hospitals are trying to source masks now then someone is doing their job wrong...a 3-6 month supply “in-house” should be the norm. Production is obviously not ramped up enough if there is a shortage. Making contradictory statements re: the effectivity of masks doesn’t help the situation. People in the US are going to buy...this isn’t communist China where the govt. can do a crack-down.
True, and luckily it seems that in this case it's unlikely to be airborne.
What does happen is infected people sneeze and cough and expel virus-laden droplets of water. For healthcare professionals working in close contact with infected patients a mask could stop that form of transmission.
For the general public, however, the risk isn't so much someone sneezing on you, it's you touching a surface that someone has sneezed on and then touching your mouth, nose or eyes..
It makes sense for healthcare professionals to wear masks but not much for the general public.

Well I’m not going to criticize what is or is not in supply or ready in this very unusual situation.....rather am grateful we have the facilities and teams of health professionals working hard to keep this virus as much contained as possible...and thus far have done a remarkable job doing just that....and especially since much of this is unknown......If ‘a’ hospital has failed to be up to standard then that is the responsibility of that hospital administration.
As for the public....there will always be the selfish and demanding who squeal like pigs if their demands aren’t filled when and how they want it. Heck they get into physical fights at even a “Fast” food establishment.
Masks are the least of the potential problem. The world is too open and people are basically stupid. The supply chain can easily collapse and most will have nothing to survive and society will burn. We are at the mercy of this virus. This could be the big one that will bring the world to its knees or just disappear eventually.
Generally agreed on that....but I think the CDC/authorities/heath depts. should be testing much more widely (like S. Korea). OK other than that.
The “scalping”/hoarding/price gouging argument that intrigues me during hurricane season are the government “anti-price gouging” tactics...help or hurt? Some (libertarian types usually) say big price increases increase supply and help people get the things they need (generators, bottled water, etc.) and other (majority??) say “no, no, no, price controls!”. Same thing going on in Hong Kong/online for masks/alcohol/sanitizer right now w/o the government stepping in yet.
It sure is.

Well, the surgeon general should have had his health care workers stay stocked up for a just in case scenario—I mean they are always talking about the next pandemic-don’t they believe in being prepared?
Further more, I would argue that people at home who have been tested, and found positive for the virus, need the surgical and N95 masks, because someone in their family is being their health care CNA. And the rest of the family needs some protection too.
So will the hospital give people who test positive but are sent home for self isolation and monitoring masks? Not likely.
Well this stuff happens in every threat, be it natural disasters, health virus’s, or anything that people rely on. Heck even company strikes, from transportation hubs to pretty much anything that involves meeting public needs or demands......and some are going to scalp/hoard/steal or whatever to get what they want. As well as those who are going to cover up/lie/blame when they’ve dropped the ball.
We’re dealing with human nature which often shows it’s dark side in a crisis......the heroic acts generally aren’t seen or heard until after .....unfortunately the media always wants whatever keeps the population ‘hyped up’ and ‘fearful’....as a calm public enjoys life rather than tune into their networks.
Why are Hospitals getting their PPE from Amazon?
I would like to know how many boxes of masks these WHO and CDC officials have stored in their homes...
“I have heard several medical doctors say to wear the mask only when you are sick! Wearing one WILL NOT KEEP YOU FROM GETTING SICK”
Yet those same medical doctors will not walk into the room of a sick person with a respiratory disease without the very same mask on, with goggles and probably a splash shield as well. So you tell me who the hypocrite is. Masks absolutely will keep the wearer from inhaling droplets that contains virius pf that there’s plenty of peer review testing to back up that assertion otherwise the healthcare industry would not use them for that express purpose. What is an accurate statement is most nonmedical professionals will not wear a perfectly effective mask properly and that will render it useless. Masks must be property fitted and worn correctly to be functional it is disingenuous to say on the face masks don’t work for normies but in the same paragraph say that medical personnel absolutely need the same masks. N95 masks are not effective against aerosol virus particles that are submicron in size only P100 or above are and those masks are full face with canister filters not cheap paper fiber masks. Before the panic a fitted full face P100 rated mask was $150+ and $20 per pair of filters they are not cheap.
