Alcohol sales up, makers hope to make relaxed rules permanent

U.S. sales of beer, wine and alcohol have increased during the coronavirus pandemic, as states relax laws on purchases to help ailing industries.

Total alcohol retail sales, which do not include alcoholic drinks sold in bars and restaurants, increased significantly in the week ending March 20, over the same period in 2019. Research firm Nielsen Corp. reported a 27.6 percent increase in wine sales, a 14 percent increase in sales of beer and related products and a 26.4 percent increase in sales of spirits. The Nielsen data suggest that consumers are stockpiling their purchases, with 3-liter boxed wine sales up 53 percent from one year ago, wines sold in cans up 95 percent and beer sold in 24-packs up by 24 percent. Online sales of beer, wine and alcohol for home delivery have also increased.

While many businesses are shut down amid the pandemic by state government orders, many states regard liquor stores as essential businesses. New York, California, Vermont, Colorado and Kentucky relaxed rules permitting beer, wine and alcohol sales to accompany restaurant meals for takeout and delivery. While the rule changes are temporary, the U.S. alcohol industry sees them as fulfillment of decades-long push to ease sales restrictions and unify laws across state lines.

"It's definitely a step forward towards liberalizing a lot of these laws," Jarrett Dieterle of nonpartisan public policy research group R Street said. "The more interconnected we get and our marketplaces get, the more people will want their state to be part of that alcohol market."

I’ve been home brewing beer since 1991, wine since 2005. A small incident in my garage made my wife give distilling 2x thumbs down on no uncertain terms. Probably for the best as I had to replace her car window. But I was this [ ] close.

Of course I stocked up on ‘beverages’ as part of my final prepping for Coronavirus - for wine, it was 12 cases, and I’m still debating another run.
= = =

Depends on your consumption rate.

You may have competition - -

French actor Gerard Depardieu revealed he can drink up to 14 bottles of wine in one, single day. That’s a lot of vin. Depardieu spoke about his drinking habits during an interview with the UK’s So Film magazine. “When I’m bored, I drink,” he said.Sep 19, 2014

So, make that other run. And take your pickup truck.

Holy Mother. That puts my best college days effort to shame. His liver must look like a tattered sponge.

To each their own... as for me, my alcohol consumption is way down. For one thing, I’m running out but even with that, I’m taking it easy... one needs their wits running at least at 100% these days.

There has been a run on tonic water in some locations.

If your cure for a hangover is to have some “hair of the dog that bit you” it could end up being worse than the hangover itself.

Stuck here in backward Pennsylvania unless you are near the border you are out of luck. We can buy wine in select supermarkets and beer. I can buy a bottle of wine at a near by supermarket but can’t walk across the parking lot to bu a bottle of bourbon at the state owned liquor store. Go figure.”

Do you think Amazon could deliver you some liquor? I bought some Brown Sugar Bourbon from them the other day because it is a drive to get to a liquor store.

Always liked Pennsylvania, beautiful state to drive through. Miss the turnpike tunnels.

Real question: has the Plymouth Rock Puritan even tried to justify closing the ABC stores?

Has he thundered “Sinners in the hands of an angry God!!” at those who tipple?

Has the Gov said, “Put down the bottle and pick up the Bible, ye drunkards!!”

Inquiring minds want to know!

;^)

I wonder how the sales are in the State Liquor Store in New Hampshire (exit off I-95). It seems to serve low-tax liquor to high-tax commuters from both Massachusetts and New York. (This North Carolina tourist was simply amazed at the size of the store and its displayed booze!)

I don’t live in PA and I don’t drink, but I have around 25-30 bottles of various alcohols from whiskey, bourbon, gin, etc..

I am a prepper and I do this cause I know it can be sold or useful in trades.

To all those who used to criticize me, learn a lesson about what the government can do TO you!

Going to be an epidemic of new alcoholics after all this.

That’s a smart move. I did the same.

A silver eagle or a bottle of booze will always be worth at least a meal for a family of 5.

And neither will ever go bad if stored properly.
