I have never owned a gun and really don’t know anything about one. I had thought for many years that I would like to get one, but the need was never an urgent one. It was always something to think about for later. Now that our country has changed, I feel it is important to get one.

However, I have no idea what I would get. Once our self-quarantining is over, I would like to get lessons and have my son (14 y.o.) learn how, too.

Can someone recommend what I should look for in a gun? It’d be primarily for home protection. I think from what you wrote, a handgun isn’t the right thing but a shotgun? I will be doing some research as well, but there are so many types that I’m overwhelmed, especially since I don’t know anything.

Thanks!

Your enemies, whom ever they are at differing times, do not believe in gun control. Just one of those life facts that can cause loss of your life if you do not pay attention.

I am an avid shooter and totally support 2A but I also push the hell out of proper safety training and making damn sure you are keeping your firearms from the hands of all others 24/7.

I carry on a CCW. I do not believe in locking my protection firearms in a safe but I always know that my guns will not be able to hurt anyone except when I want them to.

Safety and training are essential.

This is the proper way to look at it. Or a safety device.

The thing is if you find yourself in situation where you need a gun there are no good substitutes. If you need one YOU NEED ONE.

“Gun safety classes are closed.”

Selectively, of course.

One of my friends growing up was a cop’s son. The cop came home from work he would leave his holstered revolver and it’s shiny bullets laying on the kitchen table. His attitude was they all know it’s here, they know the dangers of it and if they are going to be stupid I will make it easy on them. All of us used to look at it but were afraid to get near it.

I was ranch raised on a big working ranch high in the mountains. I was always around guns and at 12 had my own 30-30 in a scabbard when we gathered cattle every fall. When I turned 15 I bought a .45LC ruger revolver and another win 94 chambered for the same round. I never left home without them.

We had a government lease that was over 1.5 million acres and put a lot of long isolated miles on horses every fa

It's Slavic version of Elijah. I didn't know that, but I do remember the character Illiya Kuryakin from "The Man from U.N.C.L.E."

When you can find, and use, the safety on a Mosin, you will have acquired some skill, anyhow.

You’re not more likely to be shot by accident...in fact accidental shootings were the lowest ever despite there being over 400 million guns in the country.

As for the claim that self defense....are you counting defensive gun uses or just defensive shootings? The CDC’s own studies showed there were anywhere from 3-4 million defensive gun uses in the country per year. If a bad guy is coming for you because he thinks you’re easy prey and you just pull out enough of your gun for him to see you have one and he suddenly decides he has urgent business elsewhere, the gun has served its purpose.

That's great! I wish my indoor one was open. I was firing my .38 special revolver today at the outdoor range, and the gunshot residue was really something! LOL

I'm used to firing in an indoor range, which has big ventilators moving the air around. Of course, in an outdoor range (barring high winds) the residue hangs around.
