Professor Luc Montagnier, a central member of the team that identified HIV during the early days of the AIDS epidemic, is now bucking the media consensus on the novel coronavirus by claiming the pathogen was at least partially edited in a laboratory.
Montagnier revealed his reasoning on a French medical podcast Thursday, according to the French newspaper Le Parisien.
According to research performed by Montagnier, a Nobel Prize winner, and his mathematician partner Jean-Claude Perez, SARS-CoV-2 contains sequences of the human immunodeficiency virus — HIV.
The medical legend took his claims a step further and asserted his confidence that the virus was pieced together in a Wuhan, China, biolab.

I'm someone who has published as many findings about the HIV link as he has.
The odds that HIV can turn up in this virus zoologically (naturally) is literally next to impossible.

The Wuhan virus is 89% identical with 2 NATURALLY OCCURRING viruses obtained from bats. There are 2 proteins in the bat viruses that are 100% identical to those in the Wuhan virus. The scientists in the video claim that the identical amino acid sequence show the new corona virus was engineered. However, these proteins are relatively unimportant and have little if anything to do with infectivity or virulence. There is NO REASON to modify these proteins. The spike protein is what is used to infect human cells and that is ~90% identical between covid 19, naturally occuring viruses from bats and pangoin and SARS/MERS viruses infecting humans. IMO the evidence that the covid 19 virus was engineered is very weak and it is quite possibly a naturally occurring strain.

As humans, our genomes are 99% identical to the genomes of chimps.

If you can find viruses in the wild that are 89% identical there are likely those that are 100% identical, especially since the genomes of viruses are relatively simple.

This is actually true. Organisms in the wild undergo natural selection in competition with other organisms in the environment. Genetically engineered ones are changed to increase or decrease a specific characteristic which often results in a slower growth rate in the wild. Genetically modified organisms in the wild do not survive unless there is an additive that gives them an advantage or that puts the indigenous organisms at a disadvantage.
