Respiratory virus shedding in exhaled breath and efficacy of face masks

We identified seasonal human coronaviruses, influenza viruses and rhinoviruses in exhaled breath and coughs of children and adults with acute respiratory illness. Surgical face masks significantly reduced detection of influenza virus RNA in respiratory droplets and coronavirus RNA in aerosols, with a trend toward reduced detection of coronavirus RNA in respiratory droplets. Our results indicate that surgical face masks could prevent transmission of human coronaviruses and influenza viruses from symptomatic individuals.

I sped down to the discussion section and was underwhelmed, actually.

Surgical masks are a bandaid.

Okay.

That’s a hell of commitment to the obvious.

I suspect the Flubros will boycott this thread...

This guy I know, a cop, tells me that he always carried a supply of “duck bill” masks against the possibility that he would get a “5150 call” (insane person, generally a street denizen).

He’d hook the guy up, and put the mask ON THE SUSPECT on the way to the lockup/psych ward. He said as soon as he started doing that, he never got sick, while the other guys were always getting colds/flu post “ding”.

So I’m told.

I am American, though currently in Asia.

I am flabbergasted at the number of Americans, who despite being part of the one country in the entire world, with the single largest population of Covid-19 cases anywhere...

Spend so very much time and effort, trying to avoid the one thing which seems so completely common sense.

Face masks everywhere. And goggles, some places.

It is fascinating, how many otherwise perfectly reasonable people, are hung up about masks.

(Just my view)

Flame away. I have been wearing a mask, since January.

Still am, despite it no longer being required... As well as practically every single person in the entire country.

Just saying. I really don’t get it.

Maybe it’s part of the political split there. I have been out of the country since Trump was elected.

Very early Trump supporter, and yes I voted for him. You bet.

I read this study with an open mind. Unfortunately it is very flawed. The results and discussion demonstrate a large error rate that makes the results inconclusive and the graphs demonstrate that when compared to control there is no statistical benefit.

It also states that while it prevents droplet transmission, it does not prevent aerosol. This is already well accepted. So I am not sure that this set out to prove?

I have read this objectively, and not with a prejudice. I am more than willing to listen to errors or disagreements with my analysis.

Thank you for posting, however, as the body of evidence needs to be expanded and critically analyzed. Unfortunately, 95% of studies are crap — but have to be conducted to uncover the 5% gold.

Yeah but ... this is also in the article:

Among the samples collected without a face mask, we found that the majority of participants with influenza virus and coronavirus infection did not shed detectable virus in respiratory droplets or aerosols, whereas for rhinovirus we detected virus in aerosols in 19 of 34 (56%) participants (compared to 4 of 10 (40%) for influenza and 8 of 23 (35%) for coronavirus). For those who did shed virus in respiratory droplets and aerosols, viral load in both tended to be low (Fig. 1). Given the high collection efficiency of the G-II (ref. 19) and given that each exhaled breath collection was conducted for 30 min, this might imply that prolonged close contact would be required for transmission to occur, even if transmission was primarily via aerosols, as has been described for rhinovirus colds20.

So it's hard to get from people not wearing masks unless you are with them for a long time. Well okay then. Seems like an important caveat.

I keep distancing. Mask in purse in case an establishment requires it. I’ll wear the mask as opposed to killing the security guard.

"It is fascinating, how many otherwise perfectly reasonable people, are hung up about masks."

It is frightening how people can freely surrender their freedoms in the name of safety.

The year I was born, seat belts were optional equipment in American cars. If you wanted them you could pay extra for them. If you didn't you could save money and not get them. You had a choice - you had freedom.

The year after I was born, seatbelts were made mandatory equipment in all new American cars. You no longer had a choice when buying a new car; you were going to pay for them even if you had no desire or intention of wearing them. A little bit of freedom was shed.

In my early teens, a lot of states started passing mandatory seat belt laws - for drivers. Passengers still had an option, and the powers that be assured us that it would only be a secondary charge: You wouldn't be pulled over for just a seat belt offense, but only ticketed if a cop pulled you over for speeding, burnt out tail light, etc. and you weren't wearing the belt. A bit less freedom.

Over the intervening years, seatbelts were mandated for all vehicle occupants, non-compliance became a primary offense, and with every dictated behavior, prior decisions and activities that had been perfectly legal were criminalized.

A few summers ago, I was living in a state in the deep south, and around this time of year, leading up to the Memorial Day Holiday, a State Cop came on the radio in a scolding, serious tone declaring that he and his posse were going to show "Zero Tolerance" for seatbelt offenses, the "Heat was on" this summer, and I had better "Click it or Ticket." Then another voice came on declaring that this message was brought to you by the State Police and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

So...in the course of my lifetime (which isn't even over yet), seatbelt wear has gone from something that was entirely optional and left to the discretion of the individual to something my own state and federal tax dollars are being spent to threaten me with.

If you think the progression of these lock downs and mask wear and social distancing requirements are going to be different, you are really fooling yourself.
