Mayor Lightfoot Pleads With Walmart, Other Retailers To Not Abandon Chicago
WBBM NEWSRADIO ^ | 6/4/20 | Craig Dellimore

Mayor Lightfoot said she’s hopeful major retailers will reopen the Chicago stores that were looted or otherwise damaged during protests surrounding George Floyd’s killing by police in Minnesota. But, she’s unsure of one of the biggest.

Mayor Lightfoot said she was on a conference call with Walmart and other major retailers that had stores looted or heavily damaged during the unrest in Chicago. She said she pleaded with them to not abandon Chicago.

"I think in the case of Walmart, what they were focused on was assessing the damage. They are doing an effort to donate fresh produce, to the extent of what's left so it doesn't perish, and other perishables, and they are talking their time, as I would expect."

There were earlier reports that Walmart expected to rebuild all stores trashed by looters and vandals, but company officials later said they would open some stores and would not say which ones.

The Mayor said most of the others said they are committed to Chicago. She said she hopes Walmart follows suit.

"My hope is that they will come back," Lightfoot said. "But I got a resounding, 'Mayor, this is our city, this is our home,' from a lot of other retailers and I would hope that Walmart would follow suit."

Another week like last week and Amazon will have it all. She doesn’t give a s#it about Walmart, she’s worried about the corporate HQs and brand name stores that draw people to Chitcago. In the end she may be lucky to have a Walmart, despite fighting like hell to keep them out not that many years ago.

She’s behind, should be talking about eliminating the police force now.

I’m surprised that she’s “pleading” for this. A more common approach is to call for SJW’s to boycott and march on these retailers unless they keep operating in her uneconomical, dangerous locations.

Once all the businesses and gainfully employed people move out of these liberal 3rd world cities I guess maybe they might not need the police after all.

The looting is supported by the Democrat establishment as wealth redistribution

The primary task of the DNC is to redistribute wealth.

Riots in cities are a twofer. First the looting is an easy way to redistribute wealth. Second like strikes by labor unions, the riotests followed by protests are a safety valve to release the pent up pressure.

If you are a Democrat official, the riots are sent from God.

She needs to talk to California or Washington state governments for retail and industrial businesses bailing when they started trying to do things that weren’t conducive. Make no mistake, the state governments caused this and are now reaping the crops of their work.

In 2018, roughly, 1800 companies and $76.7 billion were diverted out of California and more of Boeing is bailing out of Washington state by July this year as they expect another 9,000+ jobs to disappear when they move more out after their headquarters and everything except the wing division started, and completed, leaving a few years ago.

When my oldest children were young, they would see a picture of my father and say, “Grandad says, ‘Pound sand!’ “

Retail theft - in looting, shoplifting, or even fraud is rarely prosecuted in big cities. Shoplifting is rampant and there are few consequences.

It would be a waste of time to prosecute them UNLESS it is charged as a conspiracy or a group. At that point, identifying the thieves, prosecuting them, and dividing up the total loss and damage amongst them equally might provide some deterrent, but you are talking about places where the elected District Attorney wants to release everyone from the jails.

It could be effective and it would be just, but don’t hold your breath.

Another frustration that I have had is that many of the big box stores are self-insured. In other words the corporation eats the loss. For many small businesses, their insurance does not cover “civil unrest” as that would be a rider. In other words, the small businesses lost everything and coming on the heels of the shut-down there are many that will not have any choice other than to file bankruptcy and go out of business. Why would they want to rebuild when riots are quite possible again for the next cause or even when the judicial process finishes for the officers?

I keep seeing people shrug this off and say “insurance will cover it”. However, that is not true for many nor does it make looting, theft, vandalism, arson, and pandemonium acceptable.

There are many of the small businesses that have been destroyed that will likely not come back.

I am not certain any of this will help the democrats.

They might be in for a surprise this November. The media creates the narrative and hysteria, but the vast majority of Americans in the inner-city and the rest of the country want law and order.

The dirty little secret about retail in bad areas is that employee theft (and employee co-operation with local criminal gangs) is a major problem.

The inventory just magically shrinks....

Most retailers had to learn this lesson the hard way.
