Trump administration officials will brief members of Congress about intelligence regarding Russian bounties on U.S. troops in Afghanistan, the White House confirmed on Monday.
White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said during an appearance on Fox & Friends that a briefing would take place on Monday. She did not offer details regarding who would conduct the briefing and what members of Congress would attend.
There will be a briefing today, McEnany said. I think it will clear up a lot of the false reporting from The New York Times. The president has made clear that hes never been briefed.
McEnany did not comment on the substance of the intelligence, but suggested that it had not been deemed "verifiable and credible" in denying that President Trump had been briefed on the information.
Intelligence, we dont comment on it routinely but just so you know how it works, it is vetted for its veracity and it only goes to the president and the high-level officials when it is deemed as verifiable and credible, McEnany later added.
Democratic and Republican lawmakers have pressed the White House for information after the Times reported late last week that the U.S. intelligence community concluded months ago that a Russian intelligence unit secretly offered payments to Taliban-linked militants for successful attacks on coalition forces in Afghanistan.
Shortly following McEnany's remarks, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) requested an all-House briefing on the matter.
"The questions that arise are: was the President briefed, and if not, why not, and why was Congress not briefed," Pelosi wrote in a letter to Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe and CIA Director Gina Haspel.

“the [deep state] U.S. intelligence community concluded”
I think I see the problem.
Most of Congress would be more interested in being de-briefed regarding Rooskie Booty.
So the Press Secretary is implying the New York Times report is essentially true, just that it is supposedly not verifiable and/or credible.

I don’t know what planet you’re living on but that is certainly not the meaning I took from her comments.
Are you kidding? Why have a briefing if there is nothing to the story? Wow.
The target is the person who did not pass on the intelligence to the president. Maybe that target wanted proof before passing it up the chain. Im sure the mine throwers can make some proof. Oh the tangled web and incessant wars ...
Your single minded interpretation is obtuse and in this case, dead wrong.
LOL. Have a great day.
ditto
There are, literally, hundreds of reports coming daily into the IC covering every crazy story and thought you can imagine. The IC does not tell the President, JCS, Congress, or even their own SESs every single thing that comes in.
Analysts look the report over, then try to weigh the credibility of the information and the source. There are a lot of things that do not maker the cut, and never will.
Just in case you missed or chose to ignore it...
“Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) told reporters Tuesday that bombshell media reports that Russias military intelligence paid bounties to Taliban-linked militants to kill U.S. troops is absolutely inaccurate, making the claim after she and other Republicans were briefed at the White House.
I think that reporting was absolutely inaccurate. I had a briefing this morning and I know that the evidence is not corroborated, she said, emphasizing that she was putting evidence in air quotes.
We take threats seriously. At the tactical level, obviously making sure our positions are hardened and were watching out for adversaries, she added.
Ernst was one of about a half dozen Republican senators who were briefed by Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe, White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and other members of the intelligence community Tuesday morning at the White House, according to persons familiar with the meeting.
She described the briefing as very informative and reiterated the reporting in that article was very inaccurate, apparently referring to The New York Times article that broke news of the bounties on Friday.”
