Cleveland Indians players meet with team leadership to discuss potential name change

Several Cleveland Indians players met with the team's ownership on Tuesday to discuss changing the name of the team, following the decision by Washington's NFL team to change its name.

In addition to the players and team owner Paul Dolan, manager Terry Francona, president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti and general manager Mike Chernoff were also all involved in the dialogue, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported.

“I was really, really happy and content to just sit there and let them talk back and forth,” Francona said. “It’s one of the reasons that I speak so glowingly of our organization. Today was another reason why.”

He added: “Sometimes perspectives can be different and it’s good for everybody to hear that. ... Everybody was so genuinely honest, but also respectful in the way they gave their opinions. I was really proud of everybody.”

Cause the nickname of a baseball team has so much impact on a young black man dodging bullets in the hood.

All these fools are burning their bridges over absolutely nothing.

I will never watch pro sports again. As even Charles Barkley accurately pointed out, we will all sit down to watch and have crap shoved down our throats sideways. These people are so stupid. The ones running the sports programs now are not the ones that fought their way to the top. They have had too much of the easy life and don’t know how to maintain the company.

FACT is that, the name/word “Indians” has nothing at all to do with native Americans.

Indian comes from the name of the country of India. Native Americans are not Indians. The Indians name came from the mistake that mistake that Christopher Columbus made when he landed in the Americas (another questionable name) and thought that he had landed in Indian waters.

The Wikipedia entry:

“When he landed in the Antilles, Columbus referred to the resident peoples he encountered there as “Indians” reflecting his purported belief that he had reached the Indian Ocean. The name stuck; for centuries the native people of the Americas were collectively called “Indians” in various European languages.”

Thus, there is absolutely no reason to change the name that many people think refers to native Americans. It’s not about native Americans, and if native Americans have a problem with the name, it should be because they should never have been called Indians.

I live a half mile from an Indian Reservation, everyone there calls themselves “Indians.” They have Indian Taco Sales, (NDN Tacos written on the signs). All the school buses say “Indian School” on the side, etc. They only call themselves Native Americans when talking to government officials.

The Cleveland Indians should sue them for appropriating their nickname.

Technically, they are still not "Indians". Native Americans, might be closer, but then, the term "American" came way after they had been the 'original' dwellers, so, "American" is not really applicable to them either.
