At least 100 people were killed and 4,000 wounded in a massive explosion that shook Beirut on Tuesday, state-run media reported, citing the Red Cross.
Hundreds have been reported missing in the aftermath of the blast raising fears that the death toll will rise, Lebanon's Health Minister said Wednesday.
It's still unclear what exactly caused the explosion. Lebanon's Prime Minister said an investigation would focus on an estimated 2,750 metric tons of the explosive ammonium nitrate, stored at a warehouse.
Beirut's governor said the blast caused up to $5 billion worth of damage.

Sounds like Beirut is misses the bombed out architecture of the seventies.So happy to be out of the middle east and have to make believe we care that they kill each other.
A lot of people are doubting the ammonium nitrate cover story. There is a fair chance that this was a munitions dump and someone blew it up before the munitions could be used. Stuff like this has been happening at many sites. Things blow up. There is a war going on, but we’re not expected to notice it.
The Middle East is well known for its wisdom...

The ammonium nitrate part of the story is very believable.
What caused it to go off is the question that needs answer.

It was reported that the explosion was felt 180 miles away on the island of Cyprus.........................

Review the video. Notice the RAPIDLY expanding shock wave indicating a VERY high velocity explosion - like det-cord speed explosion, but this was NOT det-cord. Also ammo generates ongoing secondaries/tertiaries etc as more and more stuff blows up real good.
To me, IMHO, this was ONE large ‘lump’ of extraordinarily explosive substance that detonated.
While I used to be a firefighter, I really don’t recall if AN will detonate when ignited. Wasn’t what we studied or encountered. I kinda thought AN needed a detonation (like C4 does) in order for it to explode.
Experts should weigh in - not me.
Yep. I believe it was munitions for war activity.
Let me correct/ amend my post.
AN has an explosive detonation velocity of ‘only’ 2700 m/s, while det cord, pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN, pentrite) explodes at a rate of approximately 6400 m/s.
Peesuming that was AN, it was a LOT of AN, detonated.

Massive quantities Intentionally stored improperly, in a strategically important location.
- You don't store it all in one vulnerable location!
I am also not an expert, but I believe AN is not really explosive by itself. It needs to be mixed with Fuel Oil to make an ANFO explosion. Plus, you need a detonator. A simple warehouse filled with fertilizer doesn’t do what the Beirut site did.
