Many years ago I was teaching science at an urban high school. My students were perhaps 40% black and 60% white. Most everyone - black or white - came from a poor family.
Well, one day I got a packet from the Gates Foundation. Good ol’ Bill wanted me to pass out applications for science scholarships. Sounds good! But wait. I was to pass them out to minorities only. The white kids, poor as they might be, weren’t eligible.
Sorry, Italian kid. No application for you. Sorry, Irish kid. No application for you.
To hell with that. I threw the whole packet into the garbage. I won’t be an accessory to a racist program.
