You know, the debates at the Constitutional Convention in 1787 pretty much had all of this sh*t covered.
There is a REASON there is an Electoral College, and there is a REASON its members are appointed by State Legislatures.
That REASON is to keep the national government OUT of the process. And anyone who needs THAT explained shouldn’t be commenting about these things at all.
The choice of the President and Vice President was decentralized on purpose. That means, no Debates Commission, no CNN, no ABCNBCCBS, no campaign finance laws (for POTUS and VP, Congress has Article I authority to regulate House and Senate elections).

Seems like more than a bit of conflict of interest.
Of course all sorts of others could be accused of same. It’s a tough call.
