Remembering Pearl Harbor Day and the men of the USS Arizona
Self

Posted on 12/07/2020 8:15:14 AM PST by j.havenfarm

FRiends, a year ago at this hour I was reporting live from the Remembrance Day observances at Pearl Harbor. This year... well... you know.

But let’s take a moment to remember the tragedy and the courage that unfolded at Pearl Harbor 79 years ago today, and the triumph that ultimately ensued.

As I do every year, I offer for your viewing my son’s 2017 Eagle Scout project video biography of USS Arizona survivor Lou Conter. Now there are only two. I’m happy to report our friend Mr Conter is hale and hearty and recently celebrated his 99th birthday. He vows to make it back to Hawaii for the 80th anniversary next year, and we’ll be right there with him. Enjoy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_L0kWTqPiA

Thanks for posting it.

If you haven't seen them, this guy "Drachinifel" produces some great naval analysis, sometimes humorous, always interesting and informative. He did a three part series on the Pearl Harbor Salvage. It has a lot of footage I had never seen. Well worth the time.

The Salvage of Pearl Harbor Pt 1 - The Smoke Clears

The Salvage of Pearl Harbor Pt 2 - Up She Rises!

The Salvage of Pearl Harbor Pt 3 - The First and the Last

Not sure how I feel on this. They make it sound like the government did something wrong, but I think a line should be drawn somewhere...just sure not where.

After all, if a man was overtaken and eaten by a shark in the process of being rescued...in full view of everyone, does that help anyone knowing? Or a man trapped in a burning ship being burned alive (as a man, impaled on the superstructure of a damaged ship in the Guadalcanal campaign was, in full view of everyone but nobody could help him)

I don’t know. I don’t know how that helps anyone deal with it, but I suppose that is a personal thing and everyone deals differently with it.

The 16 days is one of the greatest unknown tragedies of Pearl Harbor. Absolutely heart rending. It’s mentioned in my sons film; there’s footage from the USS Oklahoma remembrance of 12/7/16 in the latter part of the movie

I knew this would happen, of course it is December 7th after all. A somber day of remembrance.

While today not many people are being killed, it is a far more dangerous time for our country.

In Pearl Harbor terms, today’s attack on our nation would be treated in this way:

What planes? What subs? Explosions? It’s just a Republican conspiracy theory! Videos, photos, expert testimony? I will certify that nothing is happening at Pearl Harbor.

A couple of the least deserved Medals of Honor ever. Two senior officers merely doing their duties until an explosion got them. By that standard, everyone who doesn’t pull an Eddie Slovik and is killed in action deserves one.

My uncle could never understand why the Navy had all their fleet ships and aircraft moored and parked so nicely. He did notice the carriers were out to sea. He had made a stop over before deploying to the Far East and could never stop wondering, until the attack on December 7 occurred.

When did world war II end ? Why isn’t that celebrated ? Is it because of being politically correct ? Today our friends
The Japs declared a cease fire August 15th 1945.A month later they signed the unconditional surrender treaty September 2nd. Neither day is being observed or celebrated .

Here We observe Nov 11 as the day when the the Germans at the 11th day and hour declared a cease fire for WWI but not when they signed a treaty. Then we go and change the name and purpose of recognizing the purpose of declaring the holiday as a victory for our side.

I am a fan, no doubt. The guy (Drachinifel) appears largely to know what he is talking about, is organized in his presentation, and occasionally has some rather droll English humor inserted, which I enjoy. And the footage he shows often includes things I have never seen.

I was a little kid when this happened, and we were all asking -— Where’s Pearl Harbor?

My father was on the Solace. Saw the enter attack happened. Had to stack the bodies in the corridors “Like cordwood” since the morgue was too small.

I do. T for posting. Uncle Frank Warner was shot down in the Pacific. Picked up by a carrier. Made it home. His last car I was just driving 6 months ago. 1986 Toyota Camry LS. Ted and Betty said repairs would be too costly. They had a good one for me that 2 sisters brought in from their father’s estate. I bought it. $3500. I think it’s a 2006 Honda Accord. It’s in my garage. Good car. Ted & Betty are foreign car repair having operated the small business Datsun Dr. for decades in Waterford, Michigan. Great people. Several year before I got another car from them. A Honda Accord...forgot the year.

Come to find out is was owned by the grandson of one of the architects of the Twin Towers. Had a sticker in the back window of Evergreen (maybe St) University. There is much more to this true story. I’ll stop now.

1887 20 Jan. Pearl Harbor

The Hawaiian Reciprocity Treaty of 1875 which had been renewed in 1884 but not approved by the Senate, was ratified when it was amended to give the U.S. the exclusive right to establish a fortified naval base at Pearl Harbor, near Honolulu.

(there’s a lot more to the book’s story)

War is ugly.

My mom’s 5 brothers all went. They all made it home. I could see it in their eyes as a youngster when they said something in passing. They never talked much about it.

Dad was too young. Born 1930 him and mom. War was over. R.I.P. Good parents. Kids having kids. I was 1950. Sis ‘52.
