When posting a thread, in the body and comments blocks, you have to include the html code for links and images, etc.

For a link, you need to type out the html:
<A href="LINK URL">LINK URL OR ANY TEXT</A>.

I was able to post the raw html using:
<xmp style="display:none">.

If you're using Firefox or Chrome you should consider adding the Free Republic Posting Form Enhancer extension. It makes posting a lot easier.
