A frat party at Santa Clara University attracted hordes of unmasked, un-distanced college students in parkas and winter garb, prompting school officials to create harsher mandates for those unwilling to abide by county health regulations.

At least 75 people were in attendance at the Jan. 23 daytime function, reported the school's student newspaper The Santa Clara, which first broke the news.

The event was meant to attract prospective "rushees" to California Phi, a fraternity unaffiliated with the university, the paper reported. If not, a Cal Phi leader told the paper, the fraternity could get shuttered. (The party was themed "Aspen in the '80s.")

Neither police nor other school authorities shut the event down — and despite the event taking place last week, it is unclear what repercussions students who attended have faced.

Jeanne Rosenberger, the vice provost for student life at Santa Clara, said in an email to students Wednesday that those "found to be responsible for hosting events on or off campus, participating in social gatherings ... or failing to abide by recommended isolation and quarantine recommendations" will be fined $500 and suspended.

S.C.U. is considered a Jesuit university, like Georgetown in D.C.

I've not heard of any large, leftist political demonstrations there.

Turning Point was allowed to have a chapter there over the objection of a small but loud student group who objected. This was in 2017 and there were only 6 founding members. There are frat houses in the neighborhood and a coupel of dorms, but I think most students commute in.
