A group of bipartisan House members introduced legislation Friday that would break up Apple, Amazon, Google, and Facebook.
According to a press release from Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), the bills aim to “expand opportunities for consumers, workers, and small business owners by holding unregulated Big Tech monopolies accountable for anti-competitive conduct.”
The legislation has support from both sides of the aisle.
“Not only is self-regulation by Big Tech patently ineffective, but it also comes at the direct expense of workers, consumers, small businesses, our local communities, and the free press,” said Rep. Jayapal — who helps to lead the House Antitrust Subcommittee — in the press release. “From Amazon and Facebook to Google and Apple, it is clear that these unregulated tech giants have become too big to care and too powerful to ever put people over profits.”
Meanwhile, Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO) asserted that “Big Tech has abused its dominance in the marketplace to crush competitors, censor speech, and control how we see and understand the world.”

Rockefeller came out of that MUCH wealthier than he originally was. I wonder if he sent Roosevelt a thank you gift?
Break them into tiny pieces if they control 20% of any segment of the market. There problem solved.
You want to make the monopoly line 20%?! That’s beyond asinine. Like half the business world suddenly becomes monopolies. Staples Office Max 7-11 Circle K. Not to mention that favorite phrase “break them up” is completely meaningless yo most businesses. Ma Bell could be broken up into regions. But how do you break up Amazon? Really it’s a web retailer there are no regions. Do you go after their menu categories? Music. Health. Furniture. Oh wait what if they cross your ridiculous 20% line? And let’s keep in mind Ma Bell reformed a well run business will grow and will acquire. Any breakup will be temporary. It took Amazon 15 years to go from a silly idea selling a dying product to one of the most powerful companies in world. You think it would take even half that time to do it again. And then of course you have to remember thrse are tech companies they can exist anywhere on the planet, make things too ugly here they’ll just move.
Sorry, no matter how you slice it your idea just fails.
I do think that media is too controlled by these big companies, something needs to be done about the consolidation of global media.
I love AMZ. Ordered so much from them during lockdown, they gave me
AMZ Prime free fot a year’. AMZ at least performs a useful and needed service.
As for Facebook and Twitter, off with their heads.
Yup
Makes the most sense
Yup
Great post
Good point
They forgot Twitter.
I suspect they could be forced to divest themselves of their other platforms.
Facebook should divest Instagram.
Google should divest You Tube,
And so forth.
And Ma Bell’s main competitor, General Telephone, merged with Bell Atlantic. You might have heard of the company. It’s called Verizon.
Apple is there for blocking the Parler app on its phones.
Yet satellite radio is considered a natural monopoly, or treated as one. They can’t sell a little satellite space to another company?
Thanks. I completely forgot about that.
I think that you, Zuckerberg, Bezos and Pichal are about to learn a big lesson. Namely, when somewhere around 80 to 100 million Americans get to the point they hate your guts your getting into “Bi Partisan” territory and so you are going to get taken down a notch or two and your lawyers ain’t gonna stop it.
Texaco found that out! Their arrogance and naïve faith in their lawyers cost them billions of dollars.
I think people are also forgetting that they split up Microsoft to, a couple of decades ago.
Tv is not a communication platform. You don’t converse with your group via abc, nbc, cbs, etc
You do with facebook, twitter, and others.
