In one of his first actions after surviving an election seeking to oust him from office, Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday essentially abolished single-family zoning in California — and green-lighted a series of bills intended to bolster the state’s housing production.
By signing Senate Bill 9 into law, Newsom opened the door for the development of up to four residential units on single-family lots across California. The move follows a growing push by local governments to allow multi-family dwellings in more residential neighborhoods. Berkeley voted to eliminate single-family zoning by Dec. 2022, and San Jose is set to consider the issue next month.
While opponents fear such a sweeping change will destroy the character of residential neighborhoods, supporters hail it as a necessary way to combat the state’s persistent housing crisis and correct city zoning laws that have contributed to racial segregation...

Who will benefit?
Developers who can now take a nice single family home lot and build a duplex, triplex or quadplex residential building on it.
Who will lose?
Neighborhoods whose single family home lots will begin to be populated with multi-family home lots.
Who will benefit from that?
Developers who will buy the single family lots in neighborhoods their mutli-family new build are wrecking.
Who else will benefit?
The Dims with the campaign donations from the developers.
He needs to put his illegals who voted for him someplace; get them off the streets.

Luckily where I live in LA they dont allow for this crap here..so basically how does this work..the state pays for these structures to be built? Can the owner refuse? Id like to see Newsom build some on HIS property, let some hobos move in rent free

One of those cornerstones of California living, the rising equity of single family homes, is about to flatten severely.
That’s why millions of us are moving out.
This law sure destroys the California Dream of owning your own detached home in a nice R1 residential area with good zoning protection of your dream. You can now expect to have rapacious developers building FOUR housing units built on those tiny lots all around you where you once had one house with nice neighbors. How nice of the communists.
Why stop at four units? Why not just demolish entire blocks and borrow some old Soviet housing designs?
The people who voted for this either already lived in slums
or knew their Leftist neighborhood would never be affected.
This is squarely aimed at killing off Conservative areas
of California.
Move ‘em in, change that voting demographic.
Watch your city councils, school boards, and every other
government type entity swapped out for Leftist only control.

Increase sales price per sq ft for the property, decrease construction costs, increase number of people you can squeeze into a jurisdiction, increase tax base, increase number of mortgages, increase number of transactions, and you get the media to sell it for you like it’s a hip, green, cool thing to do to live in a four plex.
Hopefully a wealthy, philanthropic conservative will buy the house next to Newsoms, tear it down and build a section 8 four-plex on it.
Personally, I prefer Khrushchyovkas to Brezhnevkas.
