Seven flight deck crew. Duh.

Isn’t the F-35 a VTOL airplane? The Navy must REALLY be slipping. But is it actually the REAL Navy with all the gender skewing and other perversion being accepted?

I think it identifies as a Bi plane!

F-35C is a “conventional” USN aircraft - i.e., a “Tailhooker.”
The F-35B is the USMC VTOL varient, and, AFAIK, is not deployed yet.
Just hazarding an educated guess, but what probably happened is that the arresting cable parted down in the arresting gear engine room.
The cable is roughly 1,000 feet long, and the energy released when that happens can be VERY deadly to sailors on the flight deck as the cable whips violently fore and aft and back and forth.

LOL, I know...I spent the better part of four years working on flight decks of carriers...
They made us watch all the training films, including one where the cable snapped and brutally took out a few people.
I had never seen that video you linked to, it looked like the E-2 was off the deck when it engaged the cable...I must say, I thought it had no chance, and was surprised to see it reappear from under the angle.
I read that quickly as I was leaving work, and didn’t see they had the Vinson in the opening sentence.
I haven’t been following this much, and last I saw they were doing tests with the F-35B on the amphibious assault ships. Guess they have the F-35C out in the fleet now.

During my two tours, bravery wasn’t a choice, it was an assignment. You survived by working with your head on a swivel at all times.

I think the C model is standard carrier ops only. No vertical.

Contract? What is this “contract” of which you speak? We didn’t have contracts when I served in the military; what we had was the draft.

Never got enough speed:

It shows the jet approaching the ski jump as it prepares to take off, before slowing down as it reaches the ramp and toppling into the ocean. The pilot can be seen ejecting from the $190 million aircraft just before it goes over the edge. Early reports suggested the crash was the result of a plastic air intake cover mistakenly being left on one of the engines.
