A fighter jet has crashed while attempting to land on the USS Carl Vinson in the South China Sea, injuring at least seven crew members, the U.S. Navy says. The pilot safely ejected.
The accident happened on Monday when the F-35C Lightning II aircraft was attempting to land on the deck of the USS Carl Vinson, which is carrying out routine flight operations in the South China Sea.
A statement from the U.S. Navy said the pilot safely ejected from the aircraft and was later recovered by a U.S. military helicopter, but 7 service members were injured, including 4 sailors who were flown to a hospital in Manila. All are in stable condition.
Specific details about Monday’s accident were not immediately released. The statement from the Navy did not say how the service members were injured or what happened to the aircraft.
“Additional details and the cause of the inflight mishap is under investigation,” the statement said.

Lost a big-wing “C” model.
F-35C is the naval variant, the F-35B is the variant capabale of vertical landings. So this was a standard type of carrier landing.
The F-35C variant is not STOVL capable. It would be a conventional trap .
NAFOD - No grade
Military Industrial Complex appreciates your business. “Crash all you want, we’ll make more.”
Only the very brave work on a flight deck.
Biden isn’t in charge of jack.
Can’t blame this one on John McCain.....
Statistically, this would probably be behind running a bodega or driving a livery car in one of America's blue cities.
Pilot was distracted by sending a text message.
The F-35C is a “standard” approach aircraft. The B model is the STOVL and can land vertically if required.
Wonder if he was waved off when calling the ball and failed to power up.
Flight deck is the most dangerous job on a carrier. I was to be sent out to the Enterprise as an Aviation Boatswains Mate. I signed up to be an AC and argued that it’s a breach of my contract and wanted to go home. Within a. Hour I was on a plane to Millington, TN for Ac, then CATTC schooling. Then off to the Enterprise I went. Saw several mishaps. One guy who walked backwards into the running prop of an E-2, decapitated that young sailor. Very dangerous place in the flight deck.
Thankfully all in this incident should recover.
“injuring at least seven crew members”
There are seven crew members on a fighter jet??? That is news to me. By the way I worked the flight deck on the USS Enterprise in the latter 1960’s and saw a number of crashes.
Seems pretty rude to fly in, screw up, eject and leave a smoking hole in the deck with injured sailors strewn about.
Details at eleven. Hopefully we won't need the Navy much for all the Joe Biden wars we're currently getting started.
I assume not another Forrestal incident …
Could have been adjusting his/hers/their makeup too. They have rearview mirrors on the canopy frame for that.
Cold have broken an arrestor cable and had to eject over the bow, or ramp strike, or missed hooking the wire and landing gear collapse. Because flight deck crew were injured and the pilot ejected it was likely a failed arresting wire flying across the deck. NAVAIR should release a statement soon.
Sounds like they’re testing some new weapons on us.
