Actually, Putin does benefit. He can claim Ukraine blew up the pipeline causing Europe to lose natural gas. He can now invade Ukraine and claim he is restoring the pipeline so Europeans will not go cold the rest of the Winter.
The Russian economy is less powerful than that of the state of California. Thus, Blowing up pipelines carrying the only major commodity that Russia exports doesn’t make sense.
The one who benefits most is Xi. As the pandemic winds down, demands for a proper investigation will be subsumed by Biden’s Ukrainian war. Biden is China’s useful idiot. As are the neocons.
