STORY: Announcing the decision, which was first reported by Reuters on Sunday, Blinken said the attacks against Rohingya were "widespread and systematic" and that evidence pointed to a clear intent to destroy the mainly Muslim minority.
A clear statement by the United States saying genocide was committed could bolster efforts to hold the Myanmar generals accountable and help prevent further atrocities, activists and U.S. officials believe.
In his speech at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, the top American diplomat read out tragic and chilling accounts of victims, who had been shot in the head, raped and tortured.
Myanmar's armed forces launched a military operation in 2017 that forced at least 730,000 of the mainly Muslim Rohingya from their homes and into neighboring Bangladesh, where they recounted killings, mass rape and arson. In 2021, Myanmar's military seized power in a coup.

It's far more important to US interests than Ukraine.
Should we intervene there?
Nobody will miss Moslems.
Yahoo via Reuters on Sunday, Blinken said....
There are three reasons in that phrase that makes me vote no.
This would be disturbing news coming from a credible source but, for the time being, I am reserving judgment.
I think the Clintons have Myanmar as a backup residence if they get too close to being prosecuted.
Rohingya = followers of the Religion of Peace.
I remember the news at the time. The Muslim illegal immigrants were forcibly persuaded to go back to Bangladesh. The Burmese likely saved themselves from future Islamic insurrection issues.
Genocide against Rohingya has been going on as far back as I can remember. The U.S. is just NOW recognizing it? Why has this issue finally come to the forefront?
Expanding, they had issues with the Muslims wanting to split off Rakhine State, and join it to Bangladesh. Since that would also take with it a chunk of their offshore oil and gas resources, the Burmese decided that this would not be allowed.

That’s one thing they didn’t do.
The Burma Army is currently attacking other minority groups including the Karen, Katchin, Karenni , and Chin. These groups contain millions of Christians as well as Buddhists and Animists. They are bombing and strafing villages throughout the eastern part of the country. There is a country wide civil war raging but only the dictators have aircraft and heavy artillery. They have plenty of people willing to fight but a few stingers would surely come in handy. Please pray for the people of Burma.
The lowland Burmese have always been a warlike, brutal, heartless, conquering people. They mercilessly ravaged their neighbors , the various Sianese Kingdoms
, for centuries . Ens look aving , pillaging and depopulating the lands stealing all wealth and destroying what they couldn’t carry away. It was supposed Buddhist-on-Buddhist depredation. Only falling under the superior firepower of the colonial Britidh ( East India Company) caused an end to this aggressive , heinous behavior . Now , since Burnese independence after WW2, all these same behaviors are ramping up again. The same ethics and cruelty. Thailand had better be careful . With evil Burmrse having ORC backing now .
They are just dealing with their home-grown pesky muslims.
“Genocide against Rohingya has been going on as far back as I can remember. The U.S. is just NOW recognizing it? Why has this issue finally come to the forefront?”
You a big Brandon supporter?
I didn’t say the Burman government weren’t a*****es. I just implied the Rohingya were no loss.
And there are two (or more) sides to the story.
“You a big Brandon supporter?”
So only Brandon supporters can recognize genocide? Pull up your big boy panties, stop slinging insults and get informed.
It’s not genocide.
They lost me at “Blinken said”
So in other words, the Burmese version of BLM and antifa torching Democrat-run inner cities, followed by the NYC and Bart "rape" transit, followed by more of those mostly peaceful protests."
