Trump stumps for Vance while acknowledging he ‘said some bad sh– about me’

Former President Trump stumped for Ohio Republican Senate candidate J.D. Vance on Saturday, while acknowledging during his rally that Vance has “said some bad sh– about me.”

“He’s a guy that said some bad sh– about me, he did,” Trump said. “But, you know what? Every one of the others did also.”

“[In] fact, I went by that standard, I don’t think I would have ever endorsed anybody in the country … They all said bad, but they all came back,” the former president continued. “But I will tell you he was tough … but the others were tough and they all — a lot of them — said some really bad things. And ultimately I put that aside.”

Vance conceded during the rally, “I wasn’t always nice.”

“The president is right. I wasn’t always nice, but the simple fact is, he’s the best president of my lifetime, and he revealed the corruption in this country like nobody else,” he said.

The “Hillbilly Elegy” author has been bashed by super PACs and others for previous comments he made against Trump, including saying, “I’m a never-Trump guy. I never liked him.”

He has also been slammed for previously saying he “might have to hold my nose and vote for Hillary Clinton.”

Vance has already apologized for his past comments, including during a Fox News interview in July 2021.

“Like a lot of people, I criticized Trump back in 2016,” Vance said at the time. “And I ask folks not to judge me based on what I said in 2016, because I’ve been very open that I did say those critical things and I regret them, and I regret being wrong about the guy.

Ditto. Was not all in on Trump in the 2016 primary. Things have changed since.

He may have not recognized it in 2016, but his people are the ones Trump fought so hard for. He may not have gotten it then, but I think he gets it now.

Most of us do. President Trump has proven himself - and I say that as a die-hard Ted Cruz fan in 2016.

I have never been so glad to be proven wrong about somebody.

We have plenty of folks who will not overlook past views or statements. But I definitely recall early primary season in 2016, and there were bloodbaths between Trump supporters and non-Trump types. It got really nasty at times.

The point being, about half of Free Republic would be toast if we weren't allowed to let our positions evolve over time as evidence rolled in.

Vance should not be afforded less grace than that. Does that mean I'll guarantee he's going to be true to his word? No, he will be a politician, and you never know who that is going to turn out. But you can say the exact same thing about anyone. You have to make the best decision you can, and hope for the best.

I agree with your post completely. But when Trump got into office and moved the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem...that alone hooked me. He had people screeching at him from all sides, saying he would ignite the Middle East, there would be bloodshed, unrest and war. And then he went ahead and did it. And nothing happened. Yeah. He had me at:

He had me at his January 20th, 2016 Inaugral Speech where he utterly destroyed the Establishment, including, GWB and Obama DIRECTLY in his speech.

He figuratively punched GWB in the face with that speech.

Never seen anything like that before, but saw it in many contexts for the next 4 years.

It was simply AMAZING to behold!

Good Point!

I think for me it was that he showed with action that he had our interests at heart.

I saw it that way as well. When he first announced he was running I figured it was a publicity stunt. I thought he would run away as soon as his provocative comments about immigration were highlighted. But to my surprise he doubled and tripled down on them.

So I switched over from Cruz. Fairweather fan of either one; I would support Trump for as long as he upheld various conservative views.

In 2015 I started the President Trump Channel on DISQUS. By the time we were deplatformed 5 years later, it had 275k followers.

>> I'm also reminded of the clowns who predicted Trump would disregard his "list" and nominate Judge Judy for the Supreme Court. Of course, they were wrong, too, when he set about doing exactly what he said he would do... all his nominees came right off that list. <<

You say that like it's a good thing.

Trump's "list" turned out to be filled with lemons, which even Trump admits now.

We were RIGHT to oppose it at the time.

Did the man do what he said he'd do in terms of picking Justices off the list or not?

That was my point. Like the appointments or not, they were not surprises. He put forth his plan, and he stuck with it. He kept the promise he'd made when he published the list.

Just like he kept his promise when he pulled out of the Paris Accord, and when he moved the embassy to Jerusalem, and when he turned the Generals loose and destroyed ISIS, and when he didn't start new foreign conflicts, and when he said he'd deliver tax relief, and when he talked about Right to Try, and when ... and... on and on.

There were plenty of people, including plenty right here of FR who didn't think he'd keep these promises. He proved the wrong.

So Vance wasn't onboard at the beginning. OK, neither were a LOT of people.

I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. He was infected by Yale and hopefully has been cured of it.

There were plenty of people, including plenty right here of FR who didn't think he'd appoint "pro-life justices in the Scalia mold".

He proved them right.

Too bad the AlwaysTrumpers who gloated about how "good" those appointments were at the time will never admit they were wrong, and apologize for bashing those of us who had our doubts.

Like Vance, I opposed Trump throughout the entire 2016 GOP primary season and (wrongly) thought he would be a disaster as the GOP nominee.

UNLIKE Vance, I didn't toy with "holding my nose and voting for Hillary", or even up ultimately voting for Egg McMuffin, who was running to the LEFT of Trump at that time.

And yes, I question the "true conservative" beliefs of anyone who went down that path.

I fear that he will be like Marco Rubio if he’s elected.

But but but, Hannity is backing Rubio, SMH, he's another one who doesn't know how to pick 'em, his fav is Dr. Oz.

he didn't sound like a guy who came from an uber-rich trust fund nest, he sounded a lot like me and many people like me. He sounded like an American, not some rich celebrity polishing his brand or a foreign stooge of some sort.

It's been said he gets along as well with the construction crew as he does with the office types, maybe more so. He started off fairly small fixing up and renting apt buildings so the blue collar guys are who he dealt with in those days before the fame. I'm from the NE so I remember him from the 70s/80s as well.

I agree. He needs to cut that out. That will turn people off big time.

Judge Judy would have probably been better than a couple of Trump’s picks. At least she believes in following the actual law.

I KNOW she is a RAT. WE WERE LED TO BELIEVE that Barrett and Kavanaugh were conservative and not RATs.

That said, when RATS make SCOTUS picks, the make sure they pick one of their own.

Our side fails to do that.
