Mass shootings are a result of a confluence of factors, but at the heart of the problem are guns—of which the Philippines has plenty. Firearms are sold openly in malls, and almost anyone can carry them, even priests and accountants.

For now, though, powerful social factors continue to have a restraining effect on indiscriminate violence. Philippine academic Raymund Narag, a criminology associate professor at Southern Illinois University and a former prisoner himself, says mass shootings in his native country are in part deterred by hiyâ, a Tagalog word meaning shame or embarrassment. “Mass shootings are a result of a confluence of factors, but at the heart of the problem are guns”

YahooNews runs the correct narrative.

There are very mass shootings because of one word: homogenity. They are homogenous in culture, religion and race.

Prove me wrong.

They may not have mass shootings, but shootings, kidnapping and robberies are still rampant, especially in the big city of Metro Manila.

I should know, I was there just before the pandemic and my friends still give me reports of rise in crime.

I don’t know philippines, but my guess is that if some punk shot up an elementary school, He would not be hidden away in some government fortress prison with a year-long, made-for-TV political trial as we do hear.

He would be promptly and publicly be torn limb-from-limb and suffer a slow death.

That kind of public humiliation and shame is also a deterrent.

Let me know if I am wrong.

Pakisama?

Horseshiite.

Most folks can’t buy, own or carry a gun legally. Big trouble if you do.

How many Gun Crimes have been prosecuted in Chicago?

Fwiw - a Bolo will do just fine.

Basilan explosions a few days ago.
There are other ways.

You mean it’s NOT the guns.......
It’s the change of Religion in the US that’s responsible!

From God Almighty to Federal Government Almighty hasn’t worked out.

The article makes some sense. But given that it’s from Time/Yahoo, I must view it with some suspicion. Those guys usually do things backwards.

They start with a position. Then they look for evidence to support their position. Any evidence that does quite fit is ignored.
