Hawley shoots down GOP talk of using debt limit as leverage on Social Security, Medicare

Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., has torpedoed a suggestion that Republican lawmakers might use an upcoming fight over the debt limit to reign in federal spending on Social Security and Medicare.

In an interview with Politico published Friday, Hawley bluntly rejected an idea proposed by some House Republicans to use an impending vote to increase the debt limit as leverage force Democrats to compromise on entitlement reforms.

"That’s dumb," Hawley said. "We need to do everything we can to keep them solvent for sure. But the idea of fiddling around with them and using those as leverage? I hope nobody’s seriously proposing that."

In fact, several GOP lawmakers vying for leadership positions on influential committees told Fox News last month that is exactly what they would like to do.

House Republicans said in October, the upcoming debt limit fight – a vote to increase the amount of money Congress may borrow to cover its expenses – presents an opportunity to force Democrats to negotiate on reforms to Social Security and Medicare.

"We're going to make sure that if you've paid into the system, your benefits are not going to be cut," said Rep. Buddy Carter, of Georgia, who is running to be the top Republican on the House Budget Committee. "But starting from there we need to look at these programs and figure out ways to make them sustainable, make them stand on their own."

Their proposals include raising the retirement age to qualify for those programs or adding means-testing to ensure that wealthy Americans with private retirement and health care plans are not monopolizing benefits that are more needed by lower-income senior citizens. Others have suggested adding work requirements for beneficiaries.

Hawley, another RINO who has been in The Swamp for far too long. Means testing is a Valid mechanism for any Federal Gov’t social expenditure. If you are wealthy why on earth do you need a couple of grand from the Feds every month?
Another factor is the current life expectancy today versus that when SS was first implemented. People are living much longer today. Raising the age to compensate seems to me to be a commonsense answer to this issue.
Lastly, no one should ever rely on the gov’t for a damned thing. We have a Lifetime to plan. Use that time and plan for your old age. Never expect others to bail you out for your lack of planning. Ever.

Social Security Disability Insurance needs to be reigned in. I personally know several people who have milked it for years, in some cases decades.

In one case, an ex son-in-law for 30 plus years, collecting SSDI while working “off the books” ripping off SSDI and the IRS. Of course I reported him, including details and nothing happened. I really don’t believe those agencies give a big rat’s a$$.

Why do you NEED a gun?

I deserve that ss check because I paid for it, so stick the “means testing” where the sun don’t shine.

F that. I look at SS is a tax cut and not an intitlement.

Means testing is fraud. That’s welfare.

No one knew how much I’d be worth when I was 18 when they started taxing me.

Just go for defunding the DOJ, Foggy Bottom and the DHS.

It’s a start.

“We have a Lifetime to plan.”

Depends on your age and current health expectations.

YMMV.

“ Means testing is a Valid mechanism for any Federal Gov’t social expenditure.”

No, means testing is robbing people who paid in, and it’s based on the Marxist principle of grabbing money from people “according to their ability to pay”

The Republicans who want to cut Social Security never talk about cutting aid to foreign countries. That’s real welfare, and they’re all for it

Interesting that we have money for medical benefits to give to millions of “refugees” surging across the border...One video today showed 850 in an hour!

Yet, we don’t have money for Social Security and Medicare which employees and employers contributed to for a lifetime?!

Not to mention the Billions given to Ukraine, transgender surgeries, etc...

“Never expect others to bail you out for your lack of planning. Ever.”

SS is not a damned “bailout.” I’ve paid into that system for 48 years. When it’s my time to collect, I’ll most assuredly collect.

You are correct, fraud on a small scale is now ignored in most fed agencies unless it is too blatant such being caught with a trunk load of US property while exiting a US military base.
