“Means testing is a Valid mechanism for any Federal Gov’t social expenditure. If you are wealthy why on earth do you need a couple of grand from the Feds every month?”

I agree, particularly since the money collected in the name of Social Security was spent on social programs as fast as it came in...and that was because the country wanted the social programs AND the low income tax rates that Reagan gave us.

In any case, expect the arrows to come your way from ‘conservatives’ who simply want their piece of the crumbling United States government regardless of what it does to their kids and grand kids.

Their proposals include raising the retirement age to qualify for those programs or adding means-testing to ensure that wealthy Americans with private retirement and health care plans are not monopolizing benefits that are more needed by lower-income senior citizens. Others have suggested adding work requirements for beneficiaries.

A few different issues that need to be addressed separately.

Raising the retirement age? To what? death? Simple math says that not everyone can make it to management. It's not like there's one manager per hands on worker. Is that old auto mechanic, carpenter, plumber etc supposed to do that into their late 70s?

Disability is a major problem with a lot of people on it who shouldn't be. Problem is, there are a whole lot of families that barely make it on one person's minimum wage job plus one person's disability. There's not enough jobs to go around in flyover country and the cruel irony is that the only places to shop for household goods are Dollar General and Walmart where you can buy crap made in China which is why there isn't enough jobs in the US.

Long before any of this is addressed, there are a great many things that the US spends money on that should be cut first. Every time a spending bill is passed, the dems put all sorts of stupid pet projects in there. We've all heard of the many stupid studies that get funded. Then there's the downright dangerous studies like say, bat viruses.

I say trim some fat off of fedgov spending before hitting mostly poor people. We must be pushing a trillion dollars spent on Ukraine. How should we pay for that? Let's make that welder keep welding until he's 78 years old even though the average age of death is 73.

Why are they even talking about this right before an election? We’re funding woke training in the military and want to talk about this?

Boy is tis the truth. Many “conservatives” I have talked to over the years don’t seem to get this.

If I’m wealthy and don’t need it, hell, let me opt out. Pay me back what I put into it, and we’ll just go our separate ways.

Hawley is smart enough to figure out that messing with Social Security and Medicare is an awful political strategy.

Any Republican who is inclined to cut these entitlements by even $1 … while also voting to piss away billions of dollars in sh!t-holes like Iraq and Ukraine … should go jump off a bridge before damaging the GOP brand for at least a generation.

Having paid into the fund with every salary check, everybody is entitled to the return on their investment in Social Security

Your discrimination against those with greater means is positively Black

"We need to do everything we can to keep them solvent for sure. But the idea of fiddling around with them and using those as leverage? I hope nobody’s seriously proposing that."

Ask the head turtle what his plans are Josh! You voted for him......

Sorry but SS and Medicare fit the very definition of “entitlement”. I paid for (because I was forced to) so I am “entitled” to the benefit I paid for. It’s irrelevant whether I need it or not, I paid for it so it’s mine.

First off, this is Politico. They asked a question like Republicans are working to use SS and Medicare as leverage. They never mention who supports this so I don’t believe the Repubs are doing this. It is fear mongering right before an election.

Democrats have been using Social Security and Medicare as a lure with a magic cure to help them from the day they came into existence while we have paid taxes to do so but they keep picking it’s pockets.

No, it’s Marxist. A basic tenet of Marxism is “from each according to his means”

There are congressjerks from both parties who want to apply this ploy to Social Security. They already started by taxing Social Security payments for the middle class.
