B-17 bomber and a smaller plane collide at Dallas airshow
Don’t know about this air show, but here in NOLA, the public can buy seats in the bombers.
Not a very clear video but it looks like it was a P51 that hit the B17.
Oh how absolutely horrible! Lifting up in 🙏🏻the families of those pilots.
From that angle it looks like the bomber was in the smaller plane’s blind spot, the same way you can’t see the road directly under your car, the pilot couldn’t see the bomber through the floor of his cockpit.
Looks like it might have been mock-combat and fighter miscalculated his angles and speed.
It looked perfectly stable to me in both videos.

Me and my wife bought a ride on a B17 a few years ago.
I agree with you. What else could it be?
Almost 60 years ago, I went to the show at Reading, PA.
I even went back a second time to show our airplane in the “Best Equipped” contest.
I decided that it was not worth the risk and never went back and have never attended another airshow since..

I thought about that too but I think it’s just appearances. Smaller plane probably didn’t see the B-17 until the last instant.
It’s probably the famous Commemorative Air Force B-17 “Sentimental Journey”. Horrible situation all around.
I should have added that there was so much going on and so many aircraft in mothion and in flight at the same time that it was extremely difficult to be aware of everything.
No matter how good the communications method, some things happen before you can take evasive action.
It was a P-51! It has excellent visibility.

Yep. That’s the plane, AFAIK. It was a well known restoration job decades ago. There are very few B-17’s still flying so, aside from the human cost, this is just a horrible loss.

The P-51 came from a lower altitude, giving grand visibility. Not only that, the P-51 has an easy view of everything in front of it. It was designed specifically for intercept, which is what you saw happen.
