Correct...
What people do not realize is that the chemical in that tanker boils at 8 degrees F.
8 degrees.....
Boiling liquid builds up pressure.
Releasing the gas was a far worse option than draining and burning it.
This was the best of 3 very bad solutions.
It does not work that way with oil trains. The local guys take the federal on site coordinator directs everything, the RR is the responsible party, meaning money, cargo owner provides direction and knowledge, state epa backs up the federal and the local fire chief manages the fire. Any decision on how to handle dangerous chemicals is way over his head. The mayor should have stepped in and called the governor, who should have called the federal EPA and asked where they were and why they were not on site.
Why not separate the tankers, cool them, douse the flames?
Couldn’t they have just sealed the leak with a Buttplug?
They were laying on their side... not enough time to get tankers in and empty them..
This stuff was used in gas form in WW1.... nasty stuff... Highly toxic and lethal in gas form... If it would have blown, the estimate is it would have went about 3500 feet, and the gas cloud would have killed everything in the area...
Like I said, 3 bad choices..
Thanks for the background info.
It most certainly is not false.
And yes; other compounds were released and likely were the cause of the fish die off and other immediate animal deaths.
Burning molecules containing chlorine creates dioxins; and if you don’t believe me, please refer to epa.gov or hundreds of other sources.
Dioxins build up over time and accumulate up the food chain (that’s you); and are deadly carcinogens. They are ‘slow kill’ compared to H Cl; but this was not the right decision. They expanded the affected zone by hundreds of miles and tens of thousands of square miles.
The federal government has closed down and permanently evacuated more than one town over this issue; for much smalller exposures than occurred here.
I just posted the CNBC interview that Morgan Brennan had with Alan Shaw. Extreme deep throat porn was tamer than the interview.
Seriously embarrassing.
Trains are federally managed by the dept of transportation manages RR Safety. That is all you need to know. This disaster is all on Buttigieg.
