Russia has warned it would be forced to take “retaliatory measures" to address what it called security threats created by Finland's membership. It had already warned that it would bolster defences along its border with NATO if the alliance deploys any additional troops or equipment to its new member.

The move is a strategic and political blow to President Vladimir Putin, who has long complained about NATO’s expansion toward Russia — though the alliance says it poses no threat to Moscow.

"The Russian Federation will be forced to take military-technical and other retaliatory measures to counter the threats to our national security arising from Finland’s accession to NATO,” the Foreign Ministry warned in a statement.

It said Finland's move marks "a fundamental change in the situation in Northern Europe, which had previously been one of the most stable regions in the world.”

Russian capacity unclear Earlier, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday that Finland’s membership reflects the alliance’s anti-Russian course and warned that Moscow will respond depending on what weapons NATO allies place there.

But Peskov also sought to play down the impact, noting that Russia has no territorial disputes with Finland.

It's not clear what additional military resources Russia could send to the Finnish border. Moscow has deployed the bulk of its most capable military units to Ukraine.

Russia invaded Ukraine supposedly over not wanting NATO on their border but then did utterly nothing when Finland joined NATO. Proving that NATO membership had little to do with why Russia invaded Ukraine.

Up next: Sweden to join NATO followed by Austria and Switzerland.

I guess it saddens you that Russia hasn’t attacked Finland yet. You and William Kristol should go have a drink and console one another.

Glad to see you coming to grips on the fall of your beloved Soviet Union.

“A peaceful border for almost 80 years.”

And now NATO will guarantee and prolong that peace. Guess Russia will just have to invade Kazakhstan next.

Seriously? This isn’t a game of ‘Chicken’. There’s no doubt the Biden admin put together this provocative move because Ukraine isn’t fairing well.

Is there a history of ‘Russians’ in these other countries being abused? I don’t believe so.

Russia regards itself as being ‘abused when anyone, anywhere, does anything to slow down or resist their expansionism.

What a flaccid and impotent comeback. But I’ll be patient, I’m sure Peskov will send you and and your friends a whole new set of regurgitated talking points for this.

This is ridiculous. Russia destabilized the world by invading Ukraine. Finland is merely reacting.

Yep, as long as Finland acceded to Russian demands regarding foreign policy.

Russia/USSR invaded Finland two times in the 40s attempting to get back the Grand Duchy that Russia lost at the end of WWI. Both times they annexed Finnish territory.

After Putin invaded Ukraine twice in the 21st century Finland decided it really didn’t want to rejoin the old Russian Empire. An understandable reaction from the Finnish point of view.
