I think Putins had enough and just decided to end the Bakhmut battle - he accomplished what he set out to do there and he has his own time agendas he's working with....and land he wants to secure further.

.... Up to now he's not been in a hurry regarding Bakhmut and people thought he took too long. They forgot the Time was in his time and he certainly wore the Ukraine army down and destroyed a lot of their machinery like a conveyor belt delivery as Zelensky kept sending in more and more troops and machinery....Putin's guys just knocked them off on after another.

The line Zelensky kept saying they were holding was nothing of the sort - Putins army just wanted that conveyor belt to keep rolling - and it did.
