Ohio voters to decide whether to protect abortion rights in November

Voters in Ohio will decide in November whether to enshrine the right to abortion in their state constitution, after state officials on Tuesday confirmed abortion rights supporters had gathered enough signatures to place the question on the ballot.

The measure will be closely watched by groups on both sides of the abortion debate, as activists consider pursuing referendums in other states after the U.S. Supreme Court last year stripped away national abortion rights.

Ohio is likely to be the only state to vote on abortion rights this fall.

The outcome may not rely on a simple majority. The state's Republican-controlled legislature, aiming to make it more difficult for the referendum to succeed, approved a separate ballot question asking voters to raise the threshold of voters required to amend the state constitution to 60%, instead of 50%.

That measure will be decided at a special election on August 8. A USA TODAY Network/Suffolk University of Ohio poll taken in early July found 58% of Ohio voters favor protecting abortion rights, with 32% opposed.

The Ohio secretary of state's office said Ohioans United for Reproductive Rights, the coalition backing the proposed abortion measure, submitted 495,938 valid signatures from 55 counties, above the minimum qualifying levels of 413,487 signatures and 44 counties.

"Now that the petition drive is complete, we're eager to continue the campaign to enshrine those rights in Ohio's Constitution and ensure that Ohioans will never again be subject to draconian reproductive health care policies imposed by extremists," two of the group's leaders, Lauren Blauvelt and Lauren Beene, said in a statement.

There is no reason for this to fail. We need to win something and Ohio is an area we do well. If we lose this, I can’t imagine how 2024 goes. August 8th is important.

Notice the bias in Reuters. The title could as easily have read: Ohio voters to decide whether to protect abortion rights unborn children in November.

If I were a betting man, Ohio voters will pass the measure, but then have the courts throw out the result of the election.

Folks in NevaDUH did that back in like 1993 or something. 26 wks or later in certain cases. In the NevaDUH Revised Statutes somewhere.

Ever notice how the term “Abortion Rights” might be taken the wrong way if one did not happen to know its conventional meaning? For example one might assume it meant the right of an unborn child not to be aborted. The term could have been “Right to Abort Children” to remove this ambiguity...but then it kind of sounds like its not really a “right” when one puts it like that...hmm go figure.

Sadly, this issue was poorly considered by the state legislature. What has happened is that August 8th and illegal initiatives has become a rallying cry for liberals. We could still pull it out, but it doesn’t look good.

You should probably prepare yourself. The left is out in force. Full court press for NO on issue 1, election in August.

Almost no effort from anyoneon the right except JD Vance that I’ve noticed. I hope I’m wrong.

“A USA TODAY Network/Suffolk University of Ohio poll”

Now, tell us what the people really think.

Maybe the heathens in my state of Michigan who passed the infamous amendment to permit total freedom for abortion can lend the Ohio Democrats their Golden Calf for demonstrations.

And the Lord’s anger was kindled against the Democrats....

I don’t understand why our side seemingly isn’t motivated on this. After finally getting Roe overturned, are we going to sit back and let liberals enshrine abortion in every state constitution from coast to coast?

It’s so frustrating That the right especially can’t get voters to the polls in large numbers. I still think it’s stupid to allow liberal have souls to the polls while we watch. If we had every megachurch have a picnic with voting, we’d have hundreds of thousand banked votes well before Election Day. Catholic Church could have voting after coffee and donuts. It’s so easy!!!!! But conservatives are lazy!!!!! Rather cry cheat rather than beat them at their own game. Frustrating!!!!!

Conservatives are the laziest people on earth. It’s amazing after getting slammed election after election since 2018, they still do a very poor job at motivating our voters. It’s criminal.

You will soon find that Ohio, like other Red states, suffers from the counting of votes in the major cities (Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinatti, Akron, Toledo, etc.), where Democrats control the vote-counts and effect the outcomes. ONLY when a vote is overwhelmingly positive, so they do not have enough voters in their population to overcome the REAL voters, does a defeat for a (D) or progressive issue get rejected.

In the baby-killing issue, all the indoctrinated yewts, and sex obsessed un-marrieds, want the murder of babies to be excused, to cover their mistakes. I'm afraid that "women's right to choose", aka, baby-killing, will probably pass and be made legal......the former USA had a moral compass; the New World Order/Global coup that killed the USA is hell-bent on destroying any remnants of civilized moral society, and scrambling the races through their constant promotion in media and advertising.

You’re not wrong. I’m on multiple mailing lists. Only email and paper mail I’ve received is for vote no (dem side).

Honestly, if my own party doesn’t make the effort, should I?

My understanding is that many claim a soul becomes part and parcel at conception. My question is since these souls are sinless, wouldn’t they be assured a place in heaven? Same for the stillborn and those that die in the womb. Aren’t they better off than those born into a sinful world and fall prey to it?

They are. Pro choice seems to have more votes. That’s why prolife has the rush to try to raise the passage from 50% for these measures to 60%. That seems to be the barrier to non-passage. The pro choice initiatives that have passed in other states haven’t reached the 60% threshold.
