In a deviation from federal recommendations, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' administration is advising residents under the age of 65 not to get the new Covid boosters from Pfizer and Moderna.
"What I have directed our department to do is to provide guidance that really recommends and advises against the use of these mRNA Covid-19 vaccines for anyone under 65," Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo said at an online panel hosted by DeSantis on Wednesday.
The statement ignores the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's recommendations: The agency said on Tuesday that everyone ages 6 months and up who has not gotten a Covid shot within the last two months should get a new booster, which targets a subvariant of omicron called XBB.1.5.
"Vaccination remains the best protection against Covid-19-related hospitalization and death. Vaccination also reduces your chance of suffering the effects of long Covid," the CDC said in a statement on Tuesday.
But Ladapo questioned the CDC’s rationale.
"With virtually every walking human being having some degree of immunity and the questions we have about safety and about effectiveness — especially about safety — my judgment is that it’s not a good decision for young people and for people who are not at high risk at this point in the pandemic," Ladapo said.

The Florida Department of Health, however, wrote in a release that "the most recent booster approval was granted in the absence of any meaningful booster-specific clinical trial data performed in humans."

The United Kingdom has opted for a different vaccination strategy than the U.S.: It is offering boosters this fall only to certain groups, including people ages 65 years and up, residents in elderly care homes, and younger people with an elevated risk of severe disease.

So, what is DeSantis trying to prove by going against the scientific recommendations? I’ll bet that the Florida health department also recommends the updated Covid vaccines.
Politicians who voice antivax rhetoric just because it has spread so far within conservative circles are making a big mistake. They have the ability to reinforce the public health message. But instead, they are helping give credibility to the charlatans who are deceiving people.
It is not a fundamental conservative principle to risk getting seriously ill, develop long-term health impairments, or die just because you want the “freedom” not to have a needle stuck briefly into your arm. No one should ever base their health decisions on what they think most aligns with their political views.
Also, death rates from Covid declined from 2021 to 2022 (because of vaccines). Among children age 15 and lower, however, Covid deaths increased. Yeah, vaccines are important for everyone.

Nothing to forgive me for, FRiend. I have never, ever wished for my parents’ and grandparents’ generations to die off. Or any generation, for that matter.
I was responding to a poster who said it will be a great thing when all the Boomers are gone. I think that’s a despicable thing to say, but I’ve heard others from the younger generations say things like that, too.
If my dad were still alive, he’d be 94 and my mom would be 91. My dad did his part to make sure we didn’t grow up Soviet. He was a Navy pilot for 28 years and his war was the Cold War.
Maybe he should recommend poisonous vaccines for everyone like Trump does.

My own generation pales in comparison to my late father’s. He was hit by a shell fragment in the head while fighting in WWII in the Philippines. Had a plate in his head after that but never quit working.
Oh well. Boomers would be ok if they didn’t destroy the country. Every president from Clinton today has been a boomer and you seem cool with it. Like they are doing a fine job. Scary.
Should read, if you are over 65 and collecting SS, then you need to get vaccinated. In FL the 65+ age group is huge.
I know, it’s hard to believe DeSantis would be against the vaccines for any age group; “three vaccines all are very, very good,” “beautiful vaccines”,”one of the greatest achievements of mankind” that was brought to us at warp speed. They have the Trump seal of approval so they have to be safe and effective.
