WASHINGTON, Dec 5 (Reuters) - Republican U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville, who has blocked hundreds of military promotions for months to protest the Pentagon's payment of abortion-related travel costs, said on Tuesday he would lift his hold on some of them.

Shortly afterward, the Senate's Democratic majority leader, Chuck Schumer, took to the Senate floor to confirm hundreds of the stalled promotions. Since there were no objections, they all went through.

"While today's confirmations are good news, these holds should never have happened in the first place," Schumer said.

The exact number of confirmations was not immediately available.

What should not have happened in the first place was the policy change to have the DOD fund transportation for an abortion in another state.

There are approximately 900 Active-duty general/flag officers (GO/FOs) today of 1.3 million troops. This is a ratio of 1 GO/FO for every 1,400 troops. During World War II there were more than 2,000 GO/FOs for a little more than 12 million Active troops (1:6,000).

The Senator was NOT "blocking" the promotions!

He has no capability to block the promotions if they were brought to a vote on an individual basis.

He was blocking the mindless batch approval of over 300 officers.

Why do we need 11 more four-star generals???

That military industrial complex just keeps growing while our actual military keeps getting more woke and weak.

I suspect that number is shading the truth to make today look better.

Wikipedia has a list but no counter so I did it with a view to speed rather than 100% accuracy. In a very quick rough count I see 555 Army Generals, 89 USMC Generals, and around 230 USN Admirals.

That is around 950. There may be a handful of Coasties or whatever. Then there are two other factors to consider. This list includes those who were Generals at the beginning of the war. George Marshall conducted HUGE numbers of firings at the beginning of the war of the ones he thought were two old, not a good fit for the fast moving and learning and expanding force he was planning, or otherwise undesirable. But all of those were still counted on the list.
Second, the list includes the ones who did not complete serving the entire 3.8 years.

In reality there were only around 1000. So the ratio is over twice as bad as you even posted.

This site is discussing that we lost 40 dead Generals in WWII. (Something else that no longer happens) And they said “out of about 1100 who served at SOME point during the war.

And I forgot, that count included around 100 USAAF. They were not included in the US Army list.
