Iran threatens Mediterranean closure over Gaza, without saying how

Dec 23 (Reuters) - An Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander said the Mediterranean Sea could be closed if the United States and its allies continued to commit "crimes" in Gaza, Iranian media reported on Saturday, without explaining how that would happen.

Iran backs Hamas against Israel and it accuses the United States of backing what it calls Israeli crimes in Gaza, where weeks of bombardment have killed thousands of people and driven most of the population from their homes.

"They shall soon await the closure of the Mediterranean Sea, (the Strait of) Gibraltar and other waterways," Tasnim quoted Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Naqdi, coordinating commander of the Guards, as saying.

Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi group has over the past month attacked merchant vessels sailing through the Red Sea in retaliation for Israel's assault on Gaza, leading some shipping companies to switch routes.

Are sea mines useful in the open ocean with strong currents in the area?

Not sure how many other ways that Iran could accomplish this, unless the mullahs are dippin into the hashish.

Once spoke to an Iranian collegue who was active in the 1960-70s anti Shah movement as a left wing, anti American activist. He said that in his wildest dreams he never thought that if the Shah were actually deposed, that it would be the mullahs who would control the government. Now ironically he lives successfully in the US, his two sons are avid Republicans and he has come to the conlusion that only if Iran suffers a Germany/Japan type defeat in war will the people of Iran be liberated in his lifetime. Yet he will never admit the politics of his youth were flawed.

time to re-instate Trump’s sanctions on Iran that Biden removed and place a blockade on them. Biden has displayed a fear of Iran. They attack or troops, continue nuclear work, militarily support Hamas and Hasbullah(sp), and more; and Biden looks the other way. Is it actual fear, black-mail - what is it???

The Mediterranean was effectively closed to commerce by Muslim pirates about 650 to 700 AD.

They killed off the rejuvenating Roman Empire.

After the Communists in Iran helped the Ayatollahs to power, the Ayatollahs killed off most of them.

only if Iran suffers a Germany/Japan type defeat in war

Merry Christmas, allendale!

The US combat forces that defeated Japan and Germany fielded a 15-million man armed force made up of 106 Army divisions, 6 Marine divisions, and a 2500-ship Navy.

In the case of Germany, of course, most of the fighting was done by the USSR.

This, of course, begs the question of just who is going to inflict a defeat such as the one you speak of on Iran?

The British military may have something to say about that

The Royal Navy had 253 surface combatants in 1945. Today they have 19.
