Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the Gaza war has come at a "very heavy price" for his side.
The military says 14 more soldiers have been killed in the Palestinian territory since Friday, bringing the total of the ground assault to 153.
Saturday was one of its deadliest days - but Mr Netanyahu said his forces had "no choice" but to keep fighting.
Meanwhile, the health ministry in Gaza - run by Hamas - says another 166 people were killed in the last day.
More than 20,000 people have been killed - mostly women and children, and 54,000 injured in Gaza since 7 October, the ministry says.
Remarking on the latest Israeli troop deaths, Mr Netanyahu said: "This is a difficult morning, after a very difficult day of fighting in Gaza."
But he said his forces would continue with "full force until the end", reiterating his goals of eliminating Hamas and ensuring the safe return of hostages held in Gaza.
"Let it be clear: this will be a long war," the Israeli prime minister added.
The military later said it had killed more than 8,000 Palestinian fighters during its campaign to date - in remarks quoted by the Reuters news agency.
The Israeli operation began after Hamas fighters crossed from Gaza into southern Israel on 7 October, killing 1,200 people and taking about 240 hostages.
Israel insists that it takes steps to avoid civilian casualties, and blames Hamas for embedding itself in densely-populated areas.

"Allegedly" with ZERO evidence.
For Israel they will be in a state of perpetual conflict with the Arabs, The Arabs will never concede a real peace to the Jews in Israel. Also Netanyahu is correct. They must win. Israel gets to lose only one war with the Arabs.
20,000 people minus 8,000 Palestinian fighters leaves 12,000 civilians. You never hear this discussed.
Obviously the actual numbers may be quite different than reported.
Why is no one suggesting Hamas surrender. If they love their children, they would.
Hopefully we are nearing the point of total Hamas collapse.
I was just wondering how many soldiers Israel has lost. One is to many. :(
Hamas numbers. Bah.
Hamas has said its numbers include all deaths, making no distinction between fighters and civilians.
You have to believe their numbers are accurate because Hamas would never lie, right?
The Israeli number of 8,000 Hamas dead may actually be conservatively low.
Good point. There's an estimate of around 50,000 Hamas terrorists. So Israel removed only around 20% of them from the battlefield so far
If they love their children, they would.

If they could, but their koran only mentions the word ‘love’ one time. To love is to show a weakness, to show a weakness is to die.
That's 'body count'. 1. I don't believe it, 2. It doesn't include civilians...for which hamas could easily prove their own figures, but that would be nonsensical, propaganda-wise.
‘women and children’ are just the type hamas loves to rape and murder. How can they possibly be appealing for sympathy on this basis when ‘women and children’ are considered eligible for that treatment.
At least two dozen this weekend according to news reports.
1. I don’t believe it, 2. It doesn’t include civilians..

They have been days when Hamas has lost hundreds, so 8,000 of some 20,000 seems reasonable, considering the 2,000 plus bunker busters they have used on Hamas tunnels and buildings (kill radius is something like 3,000 feet horizontally).
The 8,000 is not supposed to include civilians (of which there are none), just uniformed fighters.
If they loved their children, they wouldn’t use them as human shields.
“More than 20,000 people have been killed - mostly women and children, and 54,000 injured in Gaza since 7 October, the ministry says.”
BS. Show the world the bodies and graves!
It would be easy to prove both.
History dictates that all those numbers lack basis.
But to be clear, I’d have no qualms if the numbers were 100x higher. BOTH of them.
“Let it be clear: this will be a long war,” the Israeli prime minister added.

He’d better hope not. Western nations don’t have very good win-loss records for wars that drag on a decade or more. Israel may have to consider a de-militarized zone in addition to the border wall to put some more distance between themselves and potential adversaries.
