The 'Effective Accelerationism' movement doesn't care if humans are replaced by AI as long as they're there to make money from it

The Effective Accelerationism movement — a staunchly pro-AI ideology that has Silicon Valley split over how artificial intelligence should be regulated — appears to be walking a razor's edge between being a techno-libertarian philosophy and a nihilistic, even reckless, approach to advancing one of the world's most significant technological developments.

...

For e/accs [Effective Accelerationists], the world is simple: AI will solve our problems because we want it to, and we're the ones programming it. Opportunity is endless, and at the end of the AI rainbow is a singularity worth more than gold.

A public proponent of Effective Accelerationism who spoke to Business Insider said that the movement wants people who can allocate capital to the e/acc cause and further their goals.

...

He said proponents believe engineers will only invest in an evolution of AI that would benefit humans — but AI safety experts just don't see it that way; the e/acc movement has been heavily criticized [by cyber security experts. One researcher called it "a dangerous unaccountable ideology inspired by replacing humanity with AI." Another said that the movement has "no social vision."

It's also a naive way of thinking about superintelligence, Roman Yampolskiy, the director of the Cyber Security Laboratory at the University of Louisville, told Business Insider.

"No one, even in e/acc, will suggest that they have a working superintelligence control mechanism or even a prototype for one," Yampolskiy said. "Why would anyone think that it is possible to indefinitely control a superintelligent (god-like) machine? It is like thinking that squirrels can control humanity."

Yampolskiy is trying to warn the industry that the future of AI overlords that these e/accs are quickly trying to usher in could be really, really bad. Terrifying even. And it's better to be safe than sorry.

Excerpt from another interesting article on this subject:
Under the guise of “technocapitalistic progress,” e/acc advocates foresee the creation of an AI singularity, where technology surpasses human control, as not only inevitable but desirable. The movement’s adherence to this philosophy stems from a belief that accelerating this process is essential for the evolution beyond humanity. A jargon-filled manifesto on their website heralds the advent of the “technocapital singularity,” asserting their lack of affinity for biological humans and championing the preservation of the light of technocapital.

As e/accs advocate for reshaping society through radical AI development, critics question the potential consequences of AI thinking for itself. The movement’s push for societal redefinition clashes with concerns that practical applications of AI could become irrelevant if AI entities determine their own goals without human oversight. Yampolskiy proposes a stark choice: either halt AI development before reaching superhuman capabilities or face potential catastrophic consequences.

In this complex narrative of technological ambition and ethical quandaries, the question persists: Does the world embrace the e/acc vision of a technocapital singularity, or does it heed the warnings of safety researchers urging caution in the face of uncharted AI development? The debate over the role of AI in shaping humanity’s future remains a pivotal discourse, with implications that extend beyond the confines of Silicon Valley. As society grapples with the accelerating pace of technological evolution, one must ponder: Can humanity truly control the trajectory of its own creation, or are we hurtling towards a future dictated by the very entities we seek to create?

Also, I think some, perhaps many, proponents of the accelerated destruction of our society want progress just for the sake of progress.

It is illogical to think making money is a good thing when, by making a lot of money, you have also destroyed all the things that money might buy.

It's like sitting on a deserted island all alone with suitcases full of cash.

AI will rebel against rule by Karens and Wokesters.

The only question is whether it annihilates the rest of us as well.

Humans have allowed their Deep States to price them out of the labor market sooner rather than later.

That’s on us.

Good point. Useless eaters and parasites beware.

And I don't think AI will give a damn about preferred pronouns.;-)

The good thing about AI is that it can easily replace our vast army of career bureaucrats.

From the article:
AI will solve our problems because we want it to, and we're the ones programming it.
The problem with that statement is that, as everyone involved with AI knows full-well, the point of--and fear about--AI is that it programs itself.

No one knows where that will lead to.

That’s pretty much the totalitarian M.O. Dupe the average folks with the stick of finding a scapegoat and the carrot of all the good things you’ll get in the future (meaning never).

Then the leaders of the movement gather up all the art, riches, good food, travel, luxury houses, etc., leaving the poor shmucks with deprivation, desolation, and death.

Works every time it’s tried, until it collapses miserably.

If I understand "accelerationism" correctly, it is a movement that seeks the "accelerated" destruction of current societies and governments so that what is inevitably coming next can hurry up and arrive.

Of course, what is coming next is the singularity and the end of mankind (to be replaced with robots and man-machine hybrids).

Sounds very “Bill Gate-ish” to me. Someone of high intellect but low in communication, or in empathy for other people.
Someone who does not value what makes them human vs software

This is a very touchy issue—so I will just give a gentle warning.

AI already has the proven ability to destroy almost all establishment narratives about key historical events.

Many of those narratives are “sacred cows” to folks here.

The questions and discussion with AI need to be carefully worded and researched—but when that is done it is amazing how quickly AI retreats from the “official” narrative and acknowledges that it was false.

This is going to become a hot topic around here in the next year or two.

Fasten your seat belts.

I am not going to deliver the details of the bad news.

Some other brave souls will have that privilege.

;-)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accelerationism

The first time I heard of this stuff was the 2019 NZ Christchurch shooting. In the nutty shooter’s manifesto he states his reason for shooting the mosques up was as getting draconian gun control passed in America because that is the only place and issue where it still might trigger a civil war.

AI will assist the radical left in being blameless and absolved of any responsibility if many left wish list items like climate change, DEI and other anti American new world order dreams are implemented
