US calls Chinese EVs a posssible security threat
Asia Times ^

The Biden administration has warned that Chinese electric vehicles can pose a national security threat to the United States as they can collect huge amounts of personal information and may send it overseas.

US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said during an Atlantic Council fireside chat on Tuesday that the US should think deeply about whether it wants all the data collected by electric and autonomous vehicles to be sent to China. She said the information could be about the driver, the location of the vehicle and the surroundings of the vehicle.

Raimondo’s comments came after Bloomberg reported last week that the White House is preparing an executive order to prevent foreign adversaries from accessing “highly sensitive” individual data.

A Commerce Department official said the commerce chief’s comments were unrelated to the executive order. The official said Raimondo is increasingly focused on new technology areas from a national security perspective.

Chinese columnist Ruan Jiaqi on Wednesday criticized Raimondo, accusing her of maliciously defaming China’s EV makers. Ruan said EVs made by Chinese firms such as BYD have already received strong market responses in Europe and Latin America but not actually entered the US market due to an additional 25% tariff imposed by the Trump administration on Chinese autos in 2019.

Citing a previous comment from the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Ruan said the United States’ protectionism may have violated the World Trade Organization’s most-favored-nation principle and national treatment principle. She said the US should abide by WTO rules, uphold the trade order to ensure fair competition and provide a fair, just and nondiscriminatory business environment for foreign companies.

...

According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), the number of new energy vehicles (NEVs) produced in China rose 35.8% to 9.59 million units last year from 2022 while those sold in the country increased 37.9% to 9.5 million units.

The National Passenger Car Information Exchange Association said China exported 1.2 million units of NEVs, 38% of which were shipped to Europe last year. It said Belgium, the United Kingdom, Slovenia and France were among the top destinations of Chinese NEVs.

Nevermind all the Chinese gadgets and gizmos in American homes already. Babbling away like furbies on the “internet of things” to one another and their home bases in China. 🙄

Yeah, because that threat is only on China’s EVs. Everyone knows combustion engine vehicles don’t have those capabilities.

LOL...I didn’t even think along those lines...I can see it now.

They start their attack on Taiwan, and simultaneously begin preplanned and pre-exploited hack paths into the DOD and military bases, while at the same time, issuing IGNITE! commands to EV’s registered to military personnel, workers at the Pentagon and DOD, well...pretty much everywhere else.

Just to create chaos, cut off lines of communication, etc., force people to abandon buildings...

Nah. They wouldn’t do that.

...and this is already being done... and it's been ruled legal by the courts. Sept 9, 2023: Automobile manufacturers now collecting vast quantities of personal data

More than half of the brands reviewed said they can share data with government when requested, without receiving a court order.

According to a new report published by the Mozilla Foundation, an American non-profit organization, automobile manufacturers are collecting vast quantities of data on drivers and passengers, with some even tracking drivers’—and passengers’— sexual activity.

Mozilla reviewed 25 automotive brands amongst 15 car companies. The results could be shocking to many. German manufacturer Volkswagen said it could record drivers’ voices to profile them for targeted ads. More than half of the brands said they can share data with government and law enforcement when requested, without receiving a court order. Moreover, the report stated that Subaru insisted the very fact of being a passenger in one of its cars implies consent to its privacy policy!

Japanese car manufacturer Nissan even said it could sell information about drivers and passengers’ sexual activity, intelligence, and health diagnosis to data brokers, law enforcement agencies, and other companies. Nov 8, 2023: Court rules automakers can record and intercept owner text messages

A federal judge on Tuesday refused to bring back a class action lawsuit alleging four auto manufacturers had violated Washington state’s privacy laws by using vehicles’ on-board infotainment systems to record and intercept customers’ private text messages and mobile phone call logs.

The Seattle-based appellate judge ruled that the practice does not meet the threshold for an illegal privacy violation under state law, handing a big win to automakers Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen and General Motors, which are defendants in five related class action suits focused on the issue. One of those cases, against Ford, had been dismissed on appeal previously.

This is an attempt to get/destroy Tesla. They will try and link this to Tesla, somehow. They now hate Elon, and will do anything to ruin him and his companies.

“issuing IGNITE! commands to EV’s registered to military personnel”

I would just have the vehicles report their positions, and then pick which ones to light up. Or better yet, conditional IGNITE where you specify a location and if the vehicle drives into a certain distance of that, POOF! So many possibilities!

Nah. They wouldn’t do that.

With Biden in office, everything is going their way - they won't risk a direct attack yet. The danger time would come at the end of this year - if Biden is widely acknowledged as the loser of the election. During those final weeks of chaos and seditious sabotage, every villain on Earth will take their best shot at the USA.

A sobering prospect, but quite possible. Interesting, I myself was considering that same dynamic just the other day.
